    Freak Boring Question

I have a MicroMag that is an amazing shooter but the rifled PTP barrel is terrible with modern small paint. As a result, I want to do something different but keep the PTP look. I have a longer 14" barrel that I am thinking I could freak bore and just basically let the oversized rifling at the end of the barrel do nothing.

So the question is, can I just bore this barrel for the insert and call it a day (yes, I have a legit lathe to do this on). The real reason I ask is because I generally don't deal with freak inserts and the only time I tried one was on a carter buzzard and the insert kept sliding back and blocking the feed which is probably the difference between bore and breech drop.

Anyways, here is the marker and barrel in question:

I know you're talking about freak boring but if you don't deal with inserts that much you might want to look into a barrel sizer or adapter sizer kit, tech T makes a good one so does Python

And if you want to go a cheaper route as much as I don't like buying from them, ans gear sells a similar adapter

And if you really want a cheaper option and don't mind buying one adapter to leave on the barrel, LAPCO makes amazing barrel sizers

Barrel sizers such as the Lapco ones would look awesome match anno'd to the marker!

Not really looking for the cheaper/easier option, more trying to keep the clean PTP look of the old micromag.

why not leave the stock barrel alone and use something else? Leave it un modified. I can say that it will likely cost you more in tooling to drill and ream for an insert than to have bmc do it though.

I am planning to leave the stock barrel alone but bore the other black one which doesn't really have a place anywhere else in my collection. That being said, I already have all the tooling required, mainly curious if there is something I am missing because of my buzzard experience listed above.

I have a freak bored Armson Stealth and it works fine on my Micromag. I have never had problems with the insert sliding into the chamber. The insert will slide out if the barrel is unscrwed, unlike a true freak back.

Honestly, I only use freak barrels on my closed bolt markers to prevent roll outs. I never bothered with open bolt markers like Micros or anything.

However, I use an Armson Pro barrel on my Micro (pic below) and I have never noticed a problem with it shooting small paint. I am curious what issues you are having.

The main issues are velocity and consistency since both of the barrels shown have a pretty large bore. When using other barrels in this marker I can get pretty consistent 280fps but these are usually lower and all over the place. I can basically go from another barrel to these and go from 280fps +/- to anywhere between 230-270fps.

I guess my main goals are to keep the period correct, make it shoot better and also have a project to keep me busy.

I have had probably 20+ Armson barrels freak bored by BMC. I have them on my Micromags(not the anodized original barrels, I leave them alone) Armson Semi, Armson pump and Line SI Bushmaster. No issues whatsoever. It definitely helped with the efficiency and consistency. Couldn’t do it on my Raptor barrels or Prolite barrel because the insert would slide back into the gun, like you experienced.

Sounds like we have a win for freak boring armsons on the MicroMag.

          Thank yall
