Hmm, I hadnt even considered the possibility that something might not be legal. I do really like the pipe insulation idea. Easily removable, no effort to build, and could easily be extended beyond the tip of the barrel.

Nobody is going to kick down your door for a f****** piece of plastic or foam over your paintball markers barrel. You aint worth the headache it would cost them.

How about putting a piece of duct tape over the end and cutting slits in it to use as wipes?

No, but if you are doing other things they might kick your door down for.... or have really, really noisy neighbors, it is something to think about.
But in my 35 years of paintball, I've never heard of a player -ever- being harassaed about it. Only manafacturers like BOA, etc.

I have done a bit of testing regarding this when I was selling CF rain covers. What I found is if it sounds quiet to you its probably louder down range. Also with the pressures we work with in paintball its extremely difficult to make a difference beyond porting. The way suppressors work is to "catch" high pressure gas and release it in a controlled manner. It easier to do this with higher pressures because you can force the gasses in the direction you want. With paintball markers the pressures are so low any resistance to the flow such as putting foam over the porting just makes the air stay in the barrel. This can cause a bump in velocity and it will decrease the sound you hear but because the air is now all coming out behind the ball your report will be louder down range. You cant hear this because your probably not shooting at something that reflects sound well. I have tested this with a decibel meter and found that most of those designs either made 0 difference or made the report louder. The way that I found to make the most effective suppressor is to cover all the porting with what is typically known as a bloop tube and port the cap facing the marker. This design makes sure that there is no obstruction to the porting keeping it effective and the porting toward you makes the report sound louder to you but quieter down range. Even with this design paintball markers are already so quiet the reduction is still not much I don't remember the numbers but markers at about 30 ft out are so close to the noise floor a stiff breeze was able to make the meter jump higher than a control marker.

I have even tried making a destructive interference noise canceling device. I did some research into the most easily heard frequency of the human ear and then made an adapter with plates spaced at 1/4 of that wavelength. The idea was that the most noticeable sound frequency would bounce off the plates and interfere with the with itself thus canceling out that frequency. It kinda worked but not the way I really hoped.

I'm in the same (loud) boat ...
I realized I prefer a short, small gun I can wield around better than a looking barrel/rain cover.

In my experience the sound signature is far more dependent on the gun than the barrel. My eNMey with an unported barrel is still more quiet than my Angel with lots of spiral porting.

I find poppets are usually much louder than spools. My mech Ion seemed to make a lot more noise cycling than firing, but still very quiet.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

inception design straight ported barrels are crazy quiet on my cocker pump, and also on my phantom. i have a flasc phantom barrel with an either milsig or flasc mock supressor tip. it has rear porting so a bit of the shot noise is directed back. i was told its crazy quiet as well.

The whoosh tips port back toward the user. I used felt to pack mine. It was corse enough to let the pressure escape out of the back porting in the cover retention nut. It worked well especially on CO2 markers like my Phantom. It sounds loud to the user. But makes it very difficult to judge direction of the shot from the reviving end. It was effective.

If you go with a rain cover style I suggest going with an easily cleaned less dense packing material with lots porting toward the user.

I did one awhile back and it worked great. See bottom of first page.
