Cheap, ugly, and easy, custom magfed project.

Hey guys. I'm trying to get some friends to come out and play more often these days, but nobody I know wants to play generalized open games. Mostly because nobody I know wants to play anything but limited paint formats. This isn't a huge deal because hey, I've played nothing but pump/pistol for the better half of a decade, and one of my local fields hosts monthly pump/magfed only games, so no biggie.

I've got a modded Zeus G2, a Tib 8.1 when I want to roll with First Strikes, and a PMI Trracer with an SSC cocker barrel adapter. These are all just fine for me to switch up depending on my mood, but the pistols are both a little finicky for new players, with the 12 grams, and the Trracer is roundball only. I don't really need a full size Magfed setup for myself per se, but I'd like one for other people to try. I have some experience with custom projects, and I thought trying to build magfed marker would be a fun project instead of trolling the local classifieds/BST/Ebay.

So, I'm just getting some feedback. Good bodies? Good internals for the project? Good STI files to print? Magwells? Etc.

Do you have a preference for starting point. I have mag fed damn near everything in a cheap semi: Tippmann 98, 68 carbine, pro carbine, pro light, pro am, 68 Special, BT 4, JT Raider, and even a Brass Eagle Stingray. You can buy magwells from MCSUS.com and mod them to fit the gun format. So you need to decide round or FS. Then pick a magazine type that is suited for the paint choice. DAM mags are great, but feed from the rear stack, making the magwell placement tricky. MCS/Rap has several magwell variants that can handle the DMag and Helix mags. More durable then printed magwell. Tipx magwells are great for round ball only. I can posts some picks if you are interested. I also have some bodies prepped for mag fed modifications.

I don't have a big preference. Old Tippmann's are generally easy to find, I was looking at a pro carbine that needed some work as a cheap base. But, since you have so much experience with it, what's the option with the best price/performance/possibility balance, in your opinion? I'd generally be looking to run First Strikes out of it instead of roundball most of the time.

Tippmann 98 is the easiest platform to maintain. Carbine and Pro light may be more difficult to find parts. Properly cut and fitted for DMag or Helix mags will give you a variety of options. Mag wells from MCS make a fast, durable, affordable and easy conversion. Attached are some of the conversions, and a pic of the 98 cut for a bottom feed mag well.

Those all look like they were a whole lot of fun to doctor up! A 98 seems to be the way to go. How does the 98 perform with First Strikes? Any gut swapping recs? I'd assume the stock front bolt doesn't play as nice with First Strike as it does roundball.

There is also the Mak adapter for the phantom. ADN makes one for standard feednecks both take Tipx / Zetta. But they online shoot regular paint.

Not my idea, but I modified a empire spring feed to fit on a carbine/pro lite foregrip. There was a user here and on YouTube that originally made on for his. Haven't used it much since mainly playing stock class, but it was my first exposure to limited paint. Really neat being able to just switch foregrips and got from running a hopper to tubes!

You can simply 3d print magwells for the 98 if you aren't picky on mag location.
