Slicer crisis ... finally found something good

    Hello MCB,

I have been struggling to find a slicer that work for me ... I have been mostly using Cura because of the community support but i never really "loved" it.
The last few updates made it even more clunky and hard to use, and to top it off, it erased all my preset settings and custom G-Code.
This last part was the last straw for me ...

Over teh years i have tried mot (free) slicers out there but were never impressed by any of them. Some had cool features that Cura didn't have, but the unfriendliness of the interface didn't warrant the switch from an unfriendly interface with community support (Cura) for me.

All this to say: i recently found a solution to my "issue": SuperSlicer
SuperSlicer is based on PrusaSlicer by Prusa Research. PrusaSlicer is based on Slic3r by Alessandro Ranellucci and the RepRap community.
And here is their GitHub page: SuperSlicer

This may only help me, but i thought i would share if someone is wanting to try something "new".

I have to check it out. I tried out Slic3r a year or so ago but stuck with Cura.

have you tried simplify 3d? yeah, you gotta pay for it, there might a free trial out there.. if not, you can get a NQA refund for 2 weeks

the nice thing is, the license is for life, you buy it once, and you get updates for life.. it was money well spent IMO

I agree with Tracker. Pay once and forget you ever paid and enjoy a "professional" software - self proclaimed - but I believe it.

Don't hate me I'm just here to shill Simplify3D - you KNOW once you blow 150usd on a software you WILL love it forever. lolol.

For real though - I knew I'd be in your situation, hating all the free slicers, and the first printer I ever bought was bundled with S3D for an extra 100.00 and I pulled the plug. Best 3d printing purchase ever. Why would you cheapen out on the literal one thing that interfaces you and your printer? If they have the balls to charge when everyone else is free, they better be professionals like their website says they are. Anyway..

That being said I'll put my account where my mouth is, S3D comes with 2 seats, I can deactivated one of mine and let you try it out XEMON if you'd like.

I tried the "pro" version as part of an offer a while back and i wasn't impressed ... At the time i preferred Cura, but that's just me.

I wasn't impressed when i tried it (free test trial period) there were some cool features, but it didn't made sense for me a the time.
Cura used o be much more user friendly and make sense, but the newer updated made it feel like a phone app instead of a "real" software. The loss of data during the las few updated were the final nail in the coffin.

Superslicer has everything i want out of a slicer in term of settings, they are all layed and it also display the variable name.
Did i mentioned it run python scrip! you can see, edit and write your own scrip for special settings or operations!
So far its been doing great adn solved some screwup from Cura. Only time will tell if its works good, but ill give it a real try as i dont have any objection right off the bat :P

I watched the recent video Teaching Tech did covering Superslicer and his switch. Seemed like a decent overview if anyone wants to watch something about it.

Slicers seem to have a lot of " coming soon" features. I do expect the paid ones to lead the way, but Slic3r and Prusa keep adding features like the rest. I tend to think of "free" as "slow".

Nice feedback all. I too will be dabbling in the printing. A Prusa inbound. I will be looking for a larger rig in ‘22. I was reading on the S3D the past few days.

Finnnnneee. I already use Slic3r and Prusaslicer. In the end, it will be easier to use Superslicer over Slic3r. I have noticed that the Prusaslicer does a better job with some things (supports) that I have been unable to duplicate in Slic3r. Just have to pick through all of my current settings for that printer again. Now I will just have the printer and filament to blame for weirdness. That's a 33% reduction by government standards!

Ok, the calibration menu is really nice. I needed that for my old printer.
