I think I can live with FreeCAD

Autodesk is acting like they won't renew my free Fusion license. It is over three years now. I'll know for sure after my 30 day free trial is up. I think I missed more than 30 days last year and wouldn't have noticed this process.

I've been poking around and FreeCAD seems to do all I need. It is less helpful in edits and has some quirks, but for $500+ a year, I'll work it out. I have walked away from it a few times in frustration. It does most of the complex operations I want; it's just rigid. The thing that I got stuck on was the fact that a sketch can only pad [extrude] to one body, in one operation. I'm used to packing stuff into one sketch and re-using that sketch for multiple extrusions. You can make multiple holes (pockets) as long as they are in a single body. The "good practice" in Fusion of doing chamfers and fillets last in the process is more important in FreeCAD. Basically, any edit that adds a face to the model will mess up any operations downstream that are attached to a face already. Fusion can sometimes keep up with that, but not always.

This is with v.0.20. If you done Fusion, FreeCAD isn't too far off. The tutorials and documentation seem to make it harder than it really is, mainly because they explain *why*. Once you see the order of things, it's not bad.

Today I found the add-on that calls up your slicer and puts your bodies in it automatically. I can use that when trying to fit something up.

I enjoy working in Fusion 360 over any other modelling software even if I am working with polygons. I just really like the snappy workflow and the clean UI. Autodesk products felt long in the tooth for years, Fusion 360 is the opposite of that they are constantly improving the package. At $500 a year in a professional setting I would take it over anything else. I tried to move to Moi3D i just couldn't do it, felt so primitive.

I dont think i could jump into something else now. especially since fusion has cad and cam combined. I feel like im on the cusp of really getting it down too.

After fusion, freecad isn't too difficult. There's a lot of cam add-ons for it as well.

Yeah, I'll be checking my subscription. If I had CAM I would put up the money.

If you are using the free version for non profit work, just keep bugging them until they honour what they are offering. If you are able to get even one paying job doing some modelling, let it pay for itself. Really sucky that you put in time learning their software and you're left feeling like you have to jump ship.

I believe the line is if you gross 100k using the product they request you pay for it.

Have you tried OnShape? Youtuber Teaching Tech made a tutorial with that and it works nicely
To get the best out of 3D printing, it helps if you can design your own parts. In this tutorial series, we will learn to use a free 3D CAD program to do just...

Autodesk makes it hard to renew the free license, they make it seem as if you have to purchase a license after your first year is up. Every year when I need to renew I watch a video on how to do so. It involves a few steps on their website. A search for "how to renew fusion 360 free license" will guide you through it. I've tried other programs and find fusion to be the best for my needs other than solidworks, which I cant afford. I will say fusion does have it's fair share of bugs, especially when direct modeling.

I've renewed a few times, so I was expecting the hunt for the new download page. I just don't remember being forced through a trail subscription also. I might have ignored it last year.

Watching fusion servers go down and even tinkercad glitching out hard, I am looking for a program that is not reliant on the cloud whatsoever.

Can I buy the software or do I need to pay a subscription (where if i don't pay, or they get hacked, or whatever else, I lose my work)?

I just checked and they have $10/month or $100/year "maker license"
Commercial license will be several $K/year ...

PS: looks like they don't have a true purchases (once and done) option anymore 😞
