    Automag Extended Rail

Playing with continuing to reduce the weight of my mag. I whipped up an extended rail to print in ABS plastic.

It is designed to take an M3 x 10mm allen bolt and to use a mag>cocker barrel adapter instead of the spring barrel detent. I also roughed in some areas where I plan to add a phototransistor eye for my morlock'd hyperframe. I had an idea to modify the cocker adapter to house a reflective eye which may or may not happen lol.

The mag to cocker barrel adapter is here https://www.mcarterbrown.com/forum/c...spyder-detents
    Or on Makerworld here https://makerworld.com/en/models/238...fileId-2606883

I've also included a step file with a couple different variants of rails to play with/customize/whatever.
I do plan to update this for an RT Pro sear/pin at a later date, I dont actually have either at the moment. I'll have to make a drive down to Fox and get them.

    Enjoy!

Not mad. It’s not rigid enough on the grip but I’m gonna see what jlcpcb wants for a metal print. Stupid light.

Do you not still need the twist lock pin to hold the mag/cocker adapter?

The only thing I would change is the two screw holes for the foregrip. I would make it slots on both rails. Would be able to use various foregrips and place back or forward.

no, you use the m3x10mm hex bolt. You could modify the rail to take the OEM twist lock detent but I am not running that. The bolt just serves as a fixed pin.

The pics illustrate the bolt and its only job is to hold the cocker thread adapter when inserted into the body. Hope that makes sense.

i could have done slots. You can do slots! I included the step file so you can modify it however you please! I just made it in the free version of fusion 360. The longer rail is narrowed a bit.

honestly seems like my PLA prototype is more rigid than the ABS one I printed. I think with the right filament a good amount of rigidity could be had. Maybe ppa-cf filament would get the job done? Perhaps PLA HT CF? More infill? I didn’t weigh it but it’s like under 2 ounces as printed with 15% gyroid infill.

I also want to continue to refine, probably do some "mill out" areas but add cross bracing X patterns there for metal 3d printing. Looks like it's about $120 or so shipped for that sort of thing based on the current model printed in stainless steel which would be pretty cool honestly.

That’s weird. I can download both attachments just fine from the first post.

Haven't tried them yet however it’s supposed to be a game changer. US made so you don’t get your ideas ripped off. I got a few projects I’m working on I’m going to give them a go.

eh, it's fine to have it ripped off, it was just me and a caliper for an hour whipping up a simple part. I mean I put the STEP out there so people can do what they want.

Looks like it's around $100 to have SLS stainless print from JLCPCB. I have to modify the model for a lot of "pockets" to keep it light since stainless or titanium is the options there. Fun to think about. Titanium is $200 shipped which is a bit much for my wallet.

I'll go make "pockets" with an X pattern in them for maximum rigidity since it's gonna be like $100 shipped. First I'll try PLA HT CF filament though since it's much more rigid than abs.

Okay so, PLA HT GF is some otherworldly shit. This prototype rail would play without worries but I have to call out the balance. With the polymer cocker thread adapter and this ultralight rail, look at this balance!? I didnt plan this, it just is. It has no nose weight at all. It's like insane how good it sits.

I am going to further refine the rail for my exact setup to add rigidity to it. This dumbass idea might be a good one after all.

Skeleton the ule body. All you really need is the spring perch, the feedneck and the barrel threads. As long as there's enough support for each of those the rest of the body isn't really needed
