Hutbrew cooks up an… M1-Sumpin’

After building multiple wood stocks from scratch, Amish style, which all turned out… bleh- I decided to cheat and repurposed “sporterized” surplus Garand stocks…



After having gotten a deal on tippmann carbines about a year ago, I decided they were the perfect trial run for this project.

I contemplated making a drop-in wood-block insert for the sear system, but decided I ain’t got time for that, and since COB had success hacking down a pro/lite frame, I did the same. Maybe on the next version I’ll get more fancy with the trigger system….



So I extended the trigger by putting ~5” of 3/8” diameter copper roll tube (leftover from completely non-nefarious endeavors) through a table vise to flatten it out. Bent it with hand vise grips to taste. Round filed it so I don’t stab myself. Secured with zip ties, until a more permanent (metal) solution is thunk up.



I wanted to integrate a feed system (there is plenty of room under the barrel) but again, for sake of time/ease, I went with using a 68- carbine, which has the dovetail rail extended for the latch-on feedneck.



After installing the valve backward, I reassembled it the right way, and (for now) thread taped a remote attachment to the valve connector. I promise Mk II will have a 12g or 9oz tank integrated, but again for ease and time’s sake, remote line it is.



I repurposed a classic, but goofy 3/4” copper stock class tube, which I modded to fit a worn out tippmann detent. Works pretty well as a “one way” for feeding the ten tubes

Lastly I spent way too much time rasping and filing down an oak 2x2 chunk for an upper fore grip- then ran out of ideas for how to secure it, soooo a zip tie concealed by a carbine strap was the answer!



Barrel is a smart parts something or other I think I got with a lot from @Xemon



I still need to take this out and chrono her, but I’m pretty happy with the results- stay subscribed for YT links when I find time, and for Mk. II over this winter!

Nice fast start into the insane world of converting old Tippmanns into something else. Using existing rifle stocks is the best start and not cheating. There are few reasons to scratch build a rifle stock. Repurposing an existing stock is no different than repurposing the base marker. Refine this setup to get the experience for the Mark II version.

Thanks COB! I know it’s not “cheating” to go with old surplus stocks… but I’m the kinda fella who wishes he could plant a field of barley just to make a barrel of suds. 😂

I’m definitely more happy with this one than my other builds.

If you are thinking of going mag fed for MKII, I have extra 68 Carbine and Pro Carbine bodies that are predrilled for left and bottom feed. When I get some time, I will disassemble the M1 Carbine to show how I did the trigger, air line and finish details.

Not all of the modified markers have detents. The pressure from the ball below in the mag stack holds the ball in the breach. I have toyed with adding a metal wire detent on the outside of the shell through the JB welded hole.
Slicing and rotating is a non-starter for any of the Tippmann bodies. In their basic layout, the connecting rod from the hammer to the bolt, travels through the ball feed hole. Should you invert the body, to reuse the detent, the detent and lack of groove for the connecting rod, would block the bolt travel. No. The answer is to relocate the detent to the original feed hole. You could probably repurpose the hole cover with detent that they make for the TMC.
Of course, this doesn't apply to a left side feed system, as the detent can remain in its original location.

^this makes a lot of sense. I would have picture the mag pressure pushing multiple balls down the barrel, instead of securing the ball as you mentioned, I suppose the angle of entry into the breech being tweaked just right might make the biggest impact- but I’ll admit I have nearly zero experience with magazine mods so your word is gospel lol.
