Got to ask. Anybody here old enough to have actually used a paintball gun like this way back in the day. Like to mark trees to cut or cows to make into big macs? And if so how long did it take for one of you to shoot your friend with it. Lol

Not me directly. But I did buy a gun from the grandson of a cattle buyer from Winona, MN who did in fact use a paintball gun to mark cattle he intended to purchase.

The good old Nelspot 707. Gun so old it predates the first paintball GAME by a couple decades. Sadly, (well, not for my bank account) I did end up selling it to a collector from Mexico City a few years back for a respectable profit.

It's more or less assumed that some cow or tree jockey probably shot his buddy in the ass long before Charles Gaines and Hayes Noel got the idea to putz around in the woods

No doubt. It's a good story, but there is no way paintball got its real start that day.

I won the paintball specific version of this when it came out, and for the life of me I haven't been able to find it. I still have the feed tube and the holster I made for it, but can't find the actual pistol!

It was a nice piece of kit, worked well, clean action, smooth trigger pull, not too heavy. Overall it was a fun thing to have as a sidearm for a quick kamikaze run after your main ran out of paint in the middle of the woods!

                  Well, define "real."

I'm convinced that the Gaines/Noel/Gurnsey so-called "first game" was staged; that is, orchestrated to launch a business venture with a nice origin story. On the other hand, none of the other presumed fooling around with the Nelspot 707 was documented or ever lead to anything significant

There had to have been a quick draw duel or two before then. These are ranchers we're talking about here.
