Glad you asked. I wasn’t sure what the controversy is either. I’ve had goodwill not ship something out for a few weeks but that’s essentially what I expected.

Anyone please correct me if i am wrong but i will attempt to explain it from what i know.
Goodwill receives these items for free and then sells them for apx market value this in itself is not bad.
Where the controversy starts is when the items are bid to above market value and then the seller does not pay.
Goodwill offers 7 days to pay i believe and if you do not pay the item go back on the site. There have been many times in the past that members have seen an item on goodwill for sale they have bid on said item and lost it to a market value or above bid, which does happen.
Goodwill will then relist the item with the same pictures, the same description, and same "seller" before the 7 days have expired. So it may be something as simple as the buyer backed out because they got a better deal and let Goodwill know. Little Timmy decided to bid and mommy canceled it or any of a 100 different reasons. If that were to happen once in a while that would be understandable, however it happens a lot more then it should. So what it appears to me and likely others is that Goodwill is doing one of two things.
The first being they are listing the items selling them above market value paying themselves and then relisting the items again, this could be to launder money, show a higher profit margin then is really happening, or try and drive the price up for the next time it sells.
The other option is they have employees / the store bidding on items they may not know the market value but they know what your reserve bid is, they bid it a little higher then your reserve bid to try to start a bidding war and bring in more profit for the store, When they drive it out of reach of what is realistic for example an automag selling for 180 which is then immediately relisted and sells for 130. This did happen but it followed the 7 day cancel policy so i am not salty about that one.
Again there are many other options to this, and i am not saying that any of this is true but that is a rough description of the controversy.

Another portion of this other members have reported winning the bid on an item and their bid is canceled. I personally saw a time that goodwill had 3 of the exact same bundle on sale all at the same price all started at different times, and from the same store. That might have been a glitch and i do not hold much stock by it but it all adds up.
