The thing I like about these montneel z bootlegs is that they don't have a back bottle built into the body
and it was designed by one of the original owners of Montneel, Marcus NEELy. He left to form his own company, and had some innovative designs, but they ended up being sued by the Pheonix guy before they ever made it to market. (he copied its patented regulator)
For the checkmate, He wanted to address some of the shortcomings of the Z, like getting rid of the backbottle. Nobody ran backbottle anymore.
He also pinned the valve, to keep the valve from wiggling itself loose over time. I absolutely love the short, stout look of them.
That said, I have a whole box of them and none of them seem to work very well. I think there is a flaw in the design somewhere. He originally had a deal with NPS to make a ton of them, but the deal fell through. Maybe after they realized how terrible they were? They are always showing up on ebay, etc, "new in box". There must be a warehouse full of them somewhere.
