Opinions On Safteys On Paintball Guns

I find safety's on paintball guns an unnecessary nuisance. When using it I'll forget to turn it off before a game and miss a few shots due to the saftey still being on, so at this point I just don't use a saftey. I also think it is unnecessary with use of a barrel condom. What do you think? Do you use your safety?

I have guns that don't have a safety, but any of the ones that do I will generally try to use it. Barrel bags are the primary defensive layer for me, I mostly utilize safeties when passing a gun to another person, especially if that person is inexperienced. Cuts down on squibs

Here are my few notes on this (totally my personal mode of operation):
- pump/bolt action/single shot gun: I always make sure it not ready to shoot when i leave the field (fire the ball in the chamber before putting the bag on)
- electro (haven't own one in years): Should be off when not on the field ready to fire
- mech: Definitely NEED a safety.

barrel bag/condom break, wear out and fail, you CANNOT rely on a single element for safety ...

I disabled the one on my CVO after too many instances of accidentally engaging it. that’s the only gun Ive had an issue with it on though. I guess it was right where I keep my finger when my finger is not on the trigger.

Safeties on Paintball MARKERS, any extra mechanism to prevent accidental discharge is good, even if you have more than one, never hurts to be extra careful, especially for newbies that are not used to the marker. Plus you get that extra humor on the field when an excited player forgets to turn the safety off when the game starts....along with forgetting to turn the marker on, or the hopper on..

Yep, use them whenever I am playing semi. I always safe my pump by just not loading another ball but for semi I find it keeps me from cleaning barrel covers. I don't really play electro ever but I do enjoy my pnuecocker from time to time and on that the safety and/or de-gassing is the ONLY way to keep from shooting off the field.

I know some don't think it's necessary with the barrel cover, but why would you run the risk of an accidental discharge into the cover? Just creates a huge mess & I, for one, don't wanna deal with that.

That aside, I shoot and have a huge respect for firearms, and you can never have too much safety with those. I treat my paintguns pretty much the same way. The ONLY exceptions are my pump guns, and if I don't have a safety on it I try to have an on/off on it so I can degas it.

I would argue that the intended use of a firearm denotes whether you should have a safety or not. For my concealed carry, I prefer not having a safety. I don't want it to be engaged if I have to use it. For a range toy, or a hunting firearm, yes, I would like a safety please.

bellicose I agree with you. I wasn't thinking of concealed carry when I made my post. More general use.

I never liked them on Snipers/Phantoms. I would remove them from Phantoms, I accidentally hit it too often. Pump handle is the safety.

But I do use them on mech semis. Emek/M170R, I always switch on the safety when not on the field. Plus barrel cover of course. One more thing to prevent needing to clean the barrel/bag from an accidental shot.

I don't use them. Barrel bags, uncocked guns, on/off ASAs, trigger discipline, etc. do the trick just fine.

I like them for the most part. It's only bit me once when I was using my then new to me Gmek and accidentally put the safety on as I went to bunker a guy, who then proceeded to put a string of 10 balls on me at close range. I just hadn't used the Gmek enough to prevent that. I almost solely shoot single trigger markers, so when I owned a Etek 3 I really wanted a safety on that thing! My second finger kept hitting the trigger and accidently shooting my bunker or once in the barrel bag. I just wasn't used to a double trigger marker with such a light trigger.

I personally don't trust firearm safeties. I remove the magazine, clear the chamber, and leave the gun in an open breech condition.

In paintball, I think turning your air off and clearing any remaining pressure before leaving the field is the closest approximation, with the barrel bag acting as the visual cue that an open breech would.

If you are carrying and your firearm has a safety (1911, CZ-75, Firestar....etc) do you carry it with or without the Safety engaged? While I agree with both your paintball gun and firearm statements that would be for times not being actively carried/used. I agree you should not trust safeties but it does not mean they are bad or unusable just another layer of caution.

When I head out to the field carrying my marker it is gassed up and loaded with paint but I have the barrel condom installed and my safety set very similar to how I carry my EDC (holstered and safety on)

Grendel That's more what I was talking about. Heading out to the field, before and while you're actively using it. Another layer of safety.

When I leave a firearm on the shooting bench or if I leave it somewhere where I'm not actively using it I clear the chamber & leave the breech open. I unload my paintguns and put them away when I'm not actively using them.

I like and use them on everything (paintball or firearms) except my carry pistols.

The issue is the people that need them most won’t use them - no trigger discipline and barrel bag on too loose to stop more than a single shot.

Please note that’s a one-way comment. It does not imply people that choose not to use them are not safe - e.g., properly securing barrel bag, proper trigger discipline, degassing marker, etc.
