Oh great, now she's going to think she has the power to promote change when spouting her anit-vax theories.

Who does team USA paintball play against anyway?

I'd assume team UK, France, etc. A field local to me held the team Canada tryouts a week or 2 ago. Seemed more like team Ontario tbh.

To witness a niche, amateur sport collide with bad science and social media… can’t say I enjoy this cocktail.

won’t be long til Alex Jones (or worse) picks this up

Not the end of the world tbh. If someone is so distraught by either the comments made by this woman or team USA's response that they decide not to try paintball we're probably better off anyway.

While I don't think what she said was appropriate, I'm kind of happy paintball made the national news. Expose people to the concept of paintball as a semi-organized sport.

From that standpoint, it did make for some conversation on other non PB boards I frequent.

They sell the gear to help fund the team---it's not a money maker for anyone. It just helps them out with their general costs. Boston Paintball actually picked up running the US squads a few years ago for every group except the men's team. The Master's team, youth teams, and women's teams are all run by them. They play in the Nation's Cup internationally every year, and the gear sold helps them pay the costs. They have tryouts for the teams each year, and pick the team with stats/performance for players over just names. Generally, the teams have done really well.

The initial response to this was really weak, but she got booted off the team and should have been. Bullying and ridiculing a kid that's in the hospital and in real trouble is flat-out despicable---and I cannot imagine any parents that would be okay with someone deciding to attack to their kid. And it's not like the player isn't replaceable by the next girl up. They cut her after a day, and it sure seemed like the overwhelmingly negative reaction to their initial press release/weak slap-on-the-wrist had a whole lot to do with it.

It really wasn't a good look for us as a sport, and she shouldn't have been representing the country.

It’s all tainted by GI Sportz being a sponsor

GI Sportz has no say over rosters. They do sponsor some of the gear, but that's it. And it's not like Empire is making much money off this---the money made from ordering anything off the site goes straight back into the program.

people should be allowed to self identify as morons. and, honestly, each and every one of us is a moron and an idiot about something. the cancer that is social media gives folks an easy dopamine hit to dump on the self identifying morons, giving people an elevated sense of personal worth because they aren't an idiot like that person

it really is a dumb feedback loop that is best avoided.
