Can I avoid buying a garage compressor for a spray gun?

I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little buzzed up right now and I have an idea.

I have some doors to paint, and an HVLP spray gun (30-60psi operating pressure , but no compressor. I do have a ton of air tanks.

do you think I could use a paintball tank (800ish psi output) in the following setup, should I string in an LPR, and are there any parts I could take out?

Tank to remote line.
Remote line male end to asa.
asa to male adaptor
adaptor to hpr input (stock wgp turned down?)
hpr output to asa
asa to asa
asa to male adapter with quick disconnect
quick disconnect to spray gun

I don't think the setup you described could keep up with the flow.

You'll probably spend around the same at Palmer's, ninja etc as you would just buying a cheap compressor.

I'm no genius, but I feel like you'd blow through paintball tanks really quickly with the constant flow of a spray gun.

I bought one when I was repainting my shutters and it was totally worth it. I painted 2 very large sheds last summer in a day with it. It would’ve taken me a week if I was using brush and roller. I do paint a lot so mine probably gets used more than the average homeowners.

I can tell you I have a 60 gallon of the biggest single piston Ingersoll rand makes and an hlvp gun will have it running the entire time. Probably eventually starve. I've painted completes starting off full but it doesn't take much before it kicks on. The tank is roughly 2ft diameter 5ft tall to give you an idea of the volume.

What you could do is talk to local body shops about renting their booth on a weekend. We have a detail guy that's across from my work that rents our booth every so often.



EDIT: My mind automatically went to car doors but I'm thinking now you meant household doors 🤦♂️

Agreed. Airless paint sprayers FTW. It took me two days to paint my 2 story home. You could probably just rent one from Home Depot as well if you don’t want to buy. I borrowed one from a friend.

Agreed - compressors just won't keep up. You're needing 15+ SCFM, and single- phase 110 outlets can typically only provide enough power for 4-6.

I bought a Fuji spray gun and turbine. The turbine is like a little shop vac running backwards, designed for just enough pressure and lots of air. Very high quality finish, and way cheaper ($400-$600) than running enough power to buy a big enough compressor to use a body shop gun.

Wagner makes some home user versions that are probably good enough for exterior work, and they're about $150. They make an awful mess though.

At that rate, my first poke says a full 4.5k 68cuin tank has about 30 seconds in it, on a 20psi gun. I just used the air pressure from an airbrush though.

I do doors by hand, but I've painted thousands of doors and know how to do it properly

In my last house I did 8 by hand and swore off of it forever. I guess practice makes perfect but the practice part was pretty miserable.

I actually own an hvlp spray gun that I have used for small parts with my HPA tank. I own a ballystik reg that's designed to go on the bottle, but you could connect your vertical HPR directly to your bottle with a Male to male fitting in a remote on/off ASA and then screw any normal ASA to your HPR and attach your remote line there.

Your tank will definitely drain fairly quickly but if you have multiples and can refill them regularly, you should be able to get by for a while

used a 60 gal husky tank with an air gun to stain the deck.

found out that there are 2 types of guns:

one (cheaper) has constant airflow from the nozzle and adds the paint when you pull the trigger. (dont buy this kind)
the other (more expensive) has a valve for both air and paint. air and paint both come out of the nozzle at the same time only when you pull the trigger.

as far as i know, paintball tanks are high pressure low volume anyways.
