I need recommendations of good dog foods out there. I don't think I can trust online articles; they're probably being paid to say it. I also want to stay away from Nestle. What do you guys use?

I use 4Health Tractor Supply brand my 10 year old Rottweiler is strong and fit with absolutely no health issues. It’s rated really well in independent food studies and it’s about a $1 a Lb.
When he was a puppy I had him on blue buffalo but it was expensive and upset his stomach so I switched brands. 4Health it’s rated better the foot twice it’s price. Im happy with it and it can be purchased in all different size bags depending on what size dog you have.

Check out Canidae. No excess crap, just the right amount of protein your dog needs.
My dogs love it.

I cant say I have a professional science-based opinion, but we have been givivg our dog ( and all of our critters ) what we believe is good stuff.
Wellness brand foods
We have been getting our animals Wellness Core dry dog and cat food.
We also get the cats wellness brand pate, and wellness shreds.
The dog gets wellness bowl toppers for skin and coat, and wellness shreds.
Needless to say their coats are noticably softer vs the other store brands we fed all of them.
Our pooch has has gut issues with a a few brands we have tried but she guts this wellness brand well. She also willingly eats it so thats a plus.
But a trip to PetCo costs 100 typically.

I have an 11 year old German Shepherd and we’ve been feeding her Costco’s Nature’s Domain salmon and sweet potatoes. Bags are about $30 CAD and my dog loves it.
We tried Orijen and other super rich foods but just gave her the horrible squirts. Too rich for her. Better for a full working dog and super high active dog.

We used Royal Canin blend specific to dachshunds for quite some time with our first. His coat was beautiful and seemed to agree with him well. When we got our second pup he had some issue with it and we swapped to Iams. It isn't so much that I think it's the best option out there, but it is sold at our local grocery, the pup likes it, and it agrees with his booty.

I prepare my own, using some fairly simple recipes, I have read the raw ones but not easily portable if you take the pup anywhere.
Dog food was never a thing until, after WW1, Dog thrived on scraps or whatever was available for owners to prepare for their domestic animals,
Helps to have a food processor or blender.
1 lb of ground turkey or pork or beef browned
2 eggs scrambled
1 cup brown rice, made with water or stock
one bag of mixed veggies microwaved
Some tumeric and pinch of black pepper.
chop everything but the rice in the processor 20 seconds then hand mix in the rice

We have 5 dogs now and it depends on a lot of things. Our doodles (golden and Labradooodles) need sensitive stomach food. We are using the Purina black bag stuff for sensitive stomachs. Our rottweiler/great perinees mix needs grain free food. Our mini schnauzers have been eating blue puppy. We haven't decided on adult food yet. You might want to talk to your vet. At least to find out what your dog needs (no grain, sensitive stomach...). Then try whatever brand you like.-------------

I fed my shepherd mix diamond large breed lamb and rice. She lived to 12 years old without any health issues. Now we feed our 3 dogs, a dane and two terrier mixes, diamond as well. They offer lamb, chicken and beef at least if you have picky dogs. 35-40 bucks for a 40lb bag.

Raw!
Both my dogs have been on raw diets since we got them — there are many variations. We feed raw meat, bone and organ meat, eggs (sometimes I’ll toss them a fish) etc…occasional veggie or fruit, but they don’t eat it in the wild, so I don’t feed it to them). Stay away from pork bone though it seems to cause obstructions. And we only feed beef occasionally or in very small amounts mixed with other proteins .…a little to rich for my dogs
If you feed it properly (and buy sale meat or in bulk), it is less expensive then even lower mid-grade dog food (or it was, not sure with prices now). Gotta pay attention to their stool though, it’ll tell you if you’re feeding right.
They don’t need to eat NEARLY as much as if they are kibble. Best part…their poop turns grey, dries up in a couple days and blows away…no need to hunt for land mines around the back yard.
