Kinda feels like a solution looking for a problem. Is this really a big innovation?

That's what I'm wondering, especially if it incentivizes more people to put the cap on the bottle more frequently before throwing it away. Supposedly an empty soda bottle is a way bigger problem for waste management if re-capped because they withstand huge crushing pressures in landfill piles and float away into the environment if not collected.

I don't know how we as a society could better incentivize reusable containers but it would be grand if we could.

It’s pretty straight forward to ban single use plastic in most areas. They did it with CFCs

It's an interesting economics question. Which has less impact... a single canvas bag used 100 times, or a hundred disposable blown polyethylene bags? According to astudy in Denmark, the canvas bag is Waaaaaay worse from a resources-used standpoint. But it's less likely to blow across a parking lot.

Glass is infinitely recyclable. But costs more up front.

Gasoline plus when you burn it. But battery minerals are a nightmare to extract, compared to steel and aluminum and petroleum.

There are tradeoffs everywhere. All this to say, I don't think Coke saved the world yet. Just a small step that, hey, maybe will help. Not buying bottles of water in the first place is probably the bigger route for impact, though. Just the energy spent shipping Dasani to households with potable water right in the sink.
