It's a clever way to create an extremely tight pitch staircase... just gotta know which foot goes first.
These were popular ideas around 15 years ago when all the "make a 100 sqft loft" competitions were loader.

in bermuda i walked through this one split-level doorway several times, no issues. then i walked through it with a slightly different stride or approach...bam. damn near knocked myself out.Formerly chodeyg, forgive me for growing sick of the username.

Lots of Log Cabins have stairs (ladders) like this to get into the lofts. Wife and I just looked at one this weekend.
