Meh. They're a novelty. If you care about performance...literally any singular metric of performance...then these things suck. If I was going into a survival situation and my choices were this gun or a child's slingshot, I'd take the slingshot without hesitation. If I was going into a well defined, well controlled battle that was catered to the strengths of coil guns (e.g. lots of sun for solar, low ROF needs, climate controlled enviro., etc), I'd still take the child's slingshot.

200FPS? A thick sweater works as body armor.
Note the targets- every round was tumbling. We probably get better accuracy out of a typical paintball gun.
Now, on the other hand, it's interesting to see- that 200 FPS now might be 1,000 in a couple of years, or 2,000 a few after that. Accuracy could be improved by using a longer "flechette" type dart.
We're only in the flintlock era of these things.

Very cool. I enjoyed the video. At this price point for that performance... I'll wait.
For real?? Let me in on that pre-order!!! šOriginally posted by Spider! View PostThat's h8ter Dave's gun isn't it?
The year is 2063. You're 19 years old and fresh out of galactic boot camp. Your Space Marine squad slowly patrols the deserted streets of an abandoned rebel outpost, the boots of your Z-12s kicking up gentle wafts of red Martian dust into the deteriorating partially-terraformed atmosphere with each cautious step.Originally posted by Siress View PostIf I was going into a well defined, well controlled battle that was catered to the strengths of coil guns (e.g. lots of sun for solar, low ROF needs, climate controlled enviro., etc), I'd still take the child's slingshot.
Suddenly, a flash of movement. You hear the panicked cries of your squad mates over the in-helmet radio comms as training takes over and you instinctively flip the switch of your 10th generation coil gun to "on." Unfortunately for you it's too late as a separatist smashes your faceplate Goliath-style with a two-inch space rock flung from a 4000-year-old-design Bedouin sling at 50 yards.
As poisonous gasses fill your EVA, choking the oxygen from your lungs, and your vision fades to black, the last thing you see, your rifle lying next to your asphyxiating body in the red dust, flickering over and over on the interface screen:

this "rail gun" is not a new concept and has been worked on for decades. Along with a staple in sci fi as long as i can remember.
so its enevitable that tech would permit a "concept" rifle .
however this is (while tech cool) is nowhere near a practical weapon,
the FPS is not fast enough and the video clearly shows accuracy is lousey (and thats being nice).
your unlikely to be hit by this even standing still and as doc pointed out a thick sweater will stop it even if they manage to hit you.
using this someone is gonna look like the hapless "no name" character / red shirt / disposable crewmember and with usual result.
to be fair it is a good step in progress of man portable rail guns.
but as the cheesit comercial states
"not quite there yet"

It's a "David Wirth" that is on one of Ian's earlier videos with the other prototypes. IDK if it was ever determined for sure.Originally posted by Axel View PostFor real?? Let me in on that pre-order!!! š
