I have been curious about this, as well.
If you need to talk, I will listen. Leave a message and I will call you back as soon as I get it.

I assume it increased in redness as the post count increments. More importantly, what is the “comment” feature for and can’t it be switched off?

It is to leave comments, I kind of like it myself.

It's just a reputation meter that's about as useful as the Like button.

Every profile has a reputation score from 0-999. I don't know exactly where the points come from but I think it's a combination of posts and likes. Each bar is 50 points, but for some reason they only light up in pairs.

                "Reputation"

Details are hazy on how that's implemented. Sounds like it's strictly through the "Like" button with MCBs configuration. So, only the carrot and no stick. I'll speculate that it's not related to post count (e.g. Nish @ >100M posts).

The "stick" is that mods can take away points for infractions

I'm not saying that Nish's post count was manipulated, but I speculate that if post count is involved, administratively changing that count may not trigger a reputation score recalculation
