I had a thread in the members section of the old site but I figured I'd put it on the public side this time.
Is anyone else a beekeeper on here? How's your year gone so far.
In the old thread I had made myself 4 goals for this year;
1) Become self sufficient in the future and not buy bees again
2) Keep on top of mite treatments
3)Keep good track of all purchases and sales
4) Produce more honey than last year.
I’ve been working at all of the goals so far.
I started the year with 1 hive that made it through last winter and I had purchased 3 packages. Hopefully those 3 packages are the last bees I will be purchasing. I’ve taken those 4 hives and done splits on them to get me up to the 14 hives that I have now. My plan is to over winter the 14 hives and hope that I have at least 6 that make it through the winter. Anything over 6 will be sold in the spring.
I’ve kept on top of mite treatments. I did a round of treatments in July and am starting my round of fall treatments this weekend.
I’ve been keeping track of every purchase and sale. I had no idea how much I was spending in years past and I’m both glad and sad that I’m keeping track now. I’m glad because I know how much where I’ve spent money and have good records of my sales. I’m sad because I know how much I’ve spent.
as far as production goes I did beat last year but not by much. I started out great and had a good first harvest but the summer long drought hurt my fall honey flow.
This kind of wraps up this season for me. I’ve been thinking about goals for next year and have come up with the following.
Keep up with my previous 4 goals
I want to make and sell at least 10 nucs next year
I want to attempt grafting in order to help meet my goal of selling 10 nucs.
