    Removing a Smell

Another joyous day in the land of dealing with tenants… my tenants decided to make fish broth yesterday. This involved putting a crock pot under one of heat vents and let is sit for hours. Now my entire house stinks strongly of fish broth. While the cat seems please, I am not so fortunate. I HATE the smell and it’s in EVERY SINGLE F$@&$ING ROOM of my house, including my bedroom and my workshop where I tinker on paintball gear. I’m more than a little pissed about it…

Anyways, as it’s been about 24 hours and the smell still there what are some suggestions to get rid of the smell? Evicting the tenants has already crossed my mind…. But won’t make the place smell any better.

I think time and ventilation will be your best friends for this one unfortunately.

There was a recent thread about the destinkafication of used gear. One thought was ozone. Imma try it on my often ripe work boots.

Fish smell? Could not hurt to try it.

Ozonator it creates O3 and breaks smells down at a molecular level. it’s non toxic but you will want to remove pets and not breathe the O3 as it can irritate lungs. But it’s a completely natural way of disinfecting and removing smells. Works amazingly on cigarette smoke and Skunk. It will do fish or sower milk in a few Hrs.

I came to suggest the ozone machine. I use one for my cigar room. Nothing is worse than old stale cigar smell. These eliminate them perfectly (the smell, not the tenants).

It sounds like the ozone thing is the way to go, but if you are looking for something immediate, and don't want to wait on shipping, maybe try a series of car odor bombs from your local auto parts store.

We bought my wife's car from a marijuana dispensary owner and the whole car smelled like fresh marijuana really really really bad. It is a convertible and the smell was in the soft top, vents everything. My wife couldn't drive it, it stunk so bad, and she didn't want to wait a month for it to air out. So I tried a McGuire's air refresher bomb. Both of us couldn't believe how well it worked. Marijuana seems like a tough smell to get rid of, maybe fish sauce is another story though!

                    Good luck!

Most of those Car “deodorizers” are bottled O3. Well the ones worth a dam are. Key with cars is the insides of the windows nicotine and tar will stick to the inner windows. Clean the windows with invisible glass or 50/50 mix water to white vinegar. Use newspaper as it’s got good grit and scrubs it off. Roll the windows up open the vents and run an ozonator or Can version of O3 and it will eliminate smells permanently not just cover them up. It breaks them down during the process of converting back to O2. O3 is created naturally it’s the smell you get just before a rain storm. I thought is was snake oil but man it works amazing. They are used primarily in the hotel industry and it’s why your rom isn’t “ready” just yet. Often that chemical smell you get walking in a hotel is just O3 that hasn’t fully converted. It’s non toxic but can be irritating when concentrated amounts are inhaled.

I didn't realize it was canned O3, that makes a lot of sense! I know for sure how well the ozone machines work. Right at the start of Covid I worked for a laboratory and we did environmental testing so we had to remain open. So the owners paid a company to come in and ozonate like three times a week (to kill off any covid virus that made it in, it was crazy times!). Due to the nature of the laboratories (testing rancid seafood, soil samples from sewage areas, etc), certain areas had permanent smells. After the first treatment, the whole place just smelled clean and refreshing. It was such a game changer!

carbon can filter and a decently powered fan works wonders. sold at hydroponic shops. better than ozone IMO actively scrubs the air clean with filtration and won't irritate your lungs.

Carbon filters will clean air but won’t actually remove the smells from stuff in the house unfortunately. It just cleans the air so if it’s in stuff like clothing wood soft good it’s just going to filter and remove it from the air. For instance I had a Skunk Vs Cat fight just outside the vent for my forced air furnace intake vent in an apartment I managed. It completely damaged the entire contents. I ran an ozonator for 48hrs and the smell was gone. This girl had a closet full of cloths couch bedding everything I couldn’t believe how effective it was. Saved me thousands of dollars and time. They run about $100 and are worth their weight in gold.

My mom used a trick where you cut up a bunch of lemons and just leave them out and it helps absorb some of the bad smells then you just throw them out. I've used it for cat piss smells before and it seemed to make a difference.

Smell is less today, but still there is some places. Forgot I have an air purifier somewhere in the house, so will try that before going a more expensive route.

Put cinnamon on a cookie sheet, and put it in the oven @ 250-300 degrees. Bake till your house smells like cinnamon usually when the cinnamon smell is gone so is the odor.
