    What is one thing......

Most people don't know about you.

me, when I was little maybe 5-7 yrs old I almost cut my big two off. I was running around barefoot as most of us kids did back then. I had my machete and decided to go cut some sugar cane. Took a big swing, follow through cut the cane clean and right into my big toe. My grandma was one of those old school, use to say if you get hurt and come crying to me. I will whip you for being a dumbass and then fix you. So yeah I fixed myself up, not many knew about that one.

When I was studying at Karlberg Officer's School (Swedish equivalent of West Point), I was working as an undercover Close Protection Operator on the side, both domestically and abroad. Since it was undercover nobody knew about it. Not my family, and not my fellow cadets, who would have been incredibly curious about it.

It worked like a charm though, since whenever I was on a work detail, my family and friends all believed that I was at Officer's School, and my fellow cadets believed that I was taking care of whatever needed to be taken care of back home. When I got any curious questions what I had been up to the time I had been away from Officer's Shool, I usually made up something so incredibly boring, that there were no follow up questions whatsoever.

Yep, I was known as that boring guy among my fellow cadets, and they do not know to this day what my boring mundane tasks really were. To me, that was a whole lot more hilarious than bragging about my exploits.

I have written exactly two words in the official Congressional Record--no more, no less--and I once rode an elevator with Richard Simmons, who told me not to look so serious, because I was too young for that. Those two incidents are separated by nine years, but are loosely related.

I suppose under the strict definition of the wording I am a "professional writer".

I went to both the Pentagon and Senate Armed Services Committee as a witness/SME on women being allowed to enter in Submarine Service (1992). I had a calibration technician (Female ET2) at SUBTRAFAC Charleston, SC who was trying everything she could to get on Submarines. This is at the time when the military was slowly transitioning to women in combat roles. I had written an endorsement letter for her (along with several other Submariners at SUBTRAFAC). When the Admiralty looked into the possibility I was one of the active submariners that went up to DC as witnesses/subject matter experts. Little did I know that we would actually go and get interviewed by some Senators who were interested in pushing for women in combat rolls that were on an Armed Service Sub-Committee. It was a little surreal and underwhelming at the same time.

In the long run it really came down to the wives of submariners that campaigned the hardest to not allow women on subs. They finally were allowed on subs a few years ago. The biggest problem I saw was the logistics of accommodations which has supposedly been somewhat rectified with the newer subs. As an example on the USS James K. Polk there were 3 showers all in the same head for 100+ enlisted (not counting E7 and above they had their own). Now try to figure out how to cycle sailors through the shower then mix in someone who may expect privacy not a good situation. Wendy was okay with that and was willing to do the uni-sex thing but god the wives thought this was horrible......

A few years later I was the "Women at Sea" transient coordinator for the Atlantic Fleet making sure all of the female sailors who were heading to billets on combat (surface) ships got all the required training prior to going to their ship. Really learned how to read service records during that stint to figure out what what missing in their training.

It was interesting that they seemed to "care" about my opinion (maybe they didn't but felt they had to look like they cared) on the situation. Thankfully my first duty station out of "A" School was working on an Admiral's (Admiral Fox) staff and I learned early on they were just regular people so I was not too awestruck in interviews with a bunch of Navy higher ups. The Sub-committee interview (not a hearing it was just an exploratory session) at first was nerve wrecking but after spending a short while with a lot of what I felt rude behavior (asking questions then ignoring the answer, general distraction by participants ...etc.) I realized what it was like to be involved at a political level vs. practical level of interaction. So I just answered questions as quickly and concisely as possible wanting to hurry up and get out of there. I did find out there are some excellent and eclectic restaurants in Georgetown which was the best part of going up to DC.
