Last time I went trick-or-treating (which was quite a few years ago, it's been a while since I could pass for 12 ) I got a surprising number of what I found out years later, were "Chick Tracts".
I first thought, 'cool, comic strips', and then read them. For those that don't know, Chick Tracts were illustrated bible quotes by a rabidly fundamentalist author- fundamentalist enough that anyone that wasn't his particular narrow flavor of believer, was doomed to burn.
Today, people give out the same kind of thing that looks like a fake $50 bill.
Sorry, if you give out anything like that for Halloween... you're an asshole. With candy? Maybe. Instead of candy? Nope, you're an asshole.
Almost as bad are those that hand out business cards for their Scentsy crap or Amway.
(Sorry, minor rant. I used to take my trick-or-treating seriously. )

No need to apologize. People who use what they give out at Halloween to promote anything--their business, themselves, their ideology--are assholes, plain and simple.
We usually aren't home on Halloween since we take our daughter trick-or-treating with my buddy and his kids in their huge subdivision. We leave out two containers: A plastic cauldron of traditional candy on one side, and a teal pumpkin bucket with non-food items like little plastic toys on the other. One of our nephews has severe nut allergies, so we got into the whole teal pumpkin movement years ago.
I've seen Chick Tracts strewn about street corners downtown, both in Mobile and New Orleans. I would presume from some nutter handing them out to passers-by who promptly discard them.

I told Siress my parents were the types to check my candy wrappers for punctures. So the next year at Halloween, he greeted me with a plate of desserts interspersed with razor blades.
I do enjoy some dark humor...
