Oh, I have thrown some money into this pit for years.... recently gave up my reef tanks and bought a nano planted/shrimp tank. I will post some pics in a bit

Reef tanks are super rewarding but so much work, even if you cut down on the work with controllers, probes and dosing. I've found planted tanks with breeding species are the most rewarding for the effort you put in.

That's what I am thinking so far. I loved my reef tanks but coming home from vacation and finding they have imploded while your away is so disheartening... I miss them but I am getting much of the same enjoyment out of my planted tank with a fraction of the cost/work

I'm at work, so no pics. I've got two 75-gallon tanks, one is for fish, and one is for turtles. lots of work, but enjoyable if you have the time to relax and watch.

I had a coworker who had about 2 dozen aquarium, a manmade ponds with all kind of fish like arowana, sturgeon, catfish varieties, koi etc. I worked with him at a fish farm too, and he has a part time job maintaining aquariums. That dude loves fish.

I take potato quality photos, but this is my current planted tank, it's just guppies and endler's live-bearers. I've kept just about everything from fresh to brackish to coral reef. Hell one time I built an enclosed soft coral and macro-algae system in a 1 gallon jar, it lasted a few months until a hurricane took out of dorm room's electricity. If you wanna count aquaculture as fishkeeping (which I do) I've worked with; Siberian sturgeon, tarpon, amberjack, red drum, snook, pompano and tilapia, and probably a few I'm forgetting.

Here it is. A little overgrown right now.

There's 7 fish ranging in size from about 12 inches to almost 36. Our largest weighs somewhere around 30-35 lbs

I got into the hobby when my wife got a betta fish as a secret Santa gift at her office.

After a few years the betta died due to my incompetence and I switched to nano fish in a 10 gallon. I really enjoyed that for a number of years.

if I got back into it again. I def would stick with nano fish, maybe a 20 gallon tank and more real plants.

After spending tons of money on reef tank lights I bought a budget light by Hygger and its been fantastic. Think it was under $30. Doesn't connect to the phone or anything but it's very programmable with colors/brightness/times and has worked great. Only complaint is its a little awkward setting with the little pad but we'll worth it for the price. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again

ive had many tanks over the years.
growing up ive always had a tank and when i bought my house the 1st thing i did was add a tank.

ive always had inexpensive and small fish and really wanted one big one.

i bought an oscar from walmart for $8 when my son was born.
it was in a small 2gal tank in his room. it then went to a 5gal tank and then a 20gal.

this is what i expected and had a 55gal tank waiting for me.

the oscar was in that tank for a bit and wound up picking up a 90gal for the new house.

my son is 6yo and the fish is an absolute monster. its hard to take a good reading but its just under a foot long. i added some silver dollars to clean up the mess from the oscar.
i prioritized simplicity over everything else.

black sand, 2 pieces of drift wood and thats it. easy to clean the glass, easy to gravel vac, easy to maintain.
went from 3 canisters to one fluval fx4.
thats my current setup.

my FAVORITE setup by far was the bass i cought from a pond. He got REALLY BIG REALLY QUICKLY. i had a separate tank for feeder fish just for him.

you can realllllllllllllly fall down the rabbit hole with aquariums.

salt vs fresh
sump v canister
large vs nano

filtration and heating theories.
water circulation and bacterial cycles.

its definitely a fun and rewarding hobby.
you should get into it.

Had a 55 gallon for a while, Tetris, Cichlids, other accessible fish from the pet store. Had to move a number of years ago and non survived

I'm really interested in a simple planted tank. Tetris and Guppies would be a perfect re-introduction. I've got a simple 5 gallon tank I really want to setup and stick on a shelf. I'm not home all the time anymore so a somewhat self sustaining tank would be great to come home to and just enjoy.

I've seen those videos on sealed water jugs with a full ecosystem somehow existing and always wanted to do something like that.

Some really cool setups in this thread. Would love to have a ridiculous saltwater tank but I am not home enough to maintain one.

ive always wanted saltwater as well but the $ is what kept me from it.
now, as im getting older and have 2 kids, my interests have changed to ease of maintenance and practicality.
