    We Will Remember Them

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

    -John McCray 1915

"I, [all enlisted veterans], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

Greetings and kind thoughts from Canada as we remember those who paid the ultimate price for freedom. May we never forget them or their sacrifice.

Today I remember my great grandfather WS Kendall of Ottawa though he was born in Winnipeg MB in 1912. He served as a wireless radio operator for the RAF, was sent home after a tragic accident where (after begging his CO) he was allowed to go on a combat bombing mission, as his plane was taking off into fog it collided with another aircraft landing on the same runway. He was to the best of my knowledge the only survivor. He lived to 101 dying in late 2013. He is survived by 3 children, 6 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchilld

I also remember my great uncle George Herbert Kendall (the brother of the above mentioned) who served as a navigator onboard a Halifax heavy bomber. He was switched into a Lancaster tail number PB461 for his final mission, the plane was shot down over Eiken Norway no survivors. KIA December 21st 1944. His grave is in the local church yard and is still lovingly tended to by locals looking just as pristine as the day he was laid to rest.

Finally I remember my other great uncle Clarence Lyall Shaver of Avonmore ON. Born Sept 11 1918 he was my grandfather's older brother. Went off to war over my great grandmother's explicit objection. Flew 2 complete combat tours as a Hawker Typhoon pilot. KIA March 3rd 1945. He left behind a wife Katherine Purcell Shaver of Toronto.

May all 3 rest in peace.

The man with the oxygen mask on is my great uncle CL Shaver and the other man is my great uncle George Herbert (affectionately known as Herbie to family) Click image for larger version Name:	Lyell in front of Typhoon.jpg Views:	0 Size:	683.2 KB ID:	54032 Click image for larger version Name:	Uncle Herbie.jpg Views:	0 Size:	71.8 KB ID:	54033

Somewhere, my mom has a print made of an original glass image, of a great-uncle, as I recall, in his WW1 aviator's uniform.

The unfortunate part is, while some aunt or other still has the actual glass plate image (badly faded) the people who actually knew the man, or of him, are long gone. We're pretty sure we know the fellow's name, but the exact relation to the family, or any of his exploits in the war- if any- are sadly lost to history. We know he survived the war, but that's it. The only reason we know he was an aviator is from the uniform.
