I read/watched some stuff about this about 6 months ago. It seems pretty good at replicating a real basketball, honestly. I do forget the reasoning behind trying to move towards it, though. -
I hate everything about this video. Smooth brain YouTuber with mail-order GT-R paid for with ENDLESS SHILLING taking a pointless thing out of a box…what joy.
I really think there is an entire generation or two of Americans who actually did stop asking, “Why?” after that Budweiser campaign…there is no point to this. The basketball has been completely “solved”, as they say, for my entire lifetime. Mankind doesn’t need a more expensive shorter lived version. A typical basketball is like $50. A 3D printed one has to cost several times that…and for what?
It says, “Gen 1” on it. You know what that means, right? It means Gen 2 is coming, Gen 8 etc. It’s designed to be obsolete and soon which is good because it will probably fall apart or chunks will come out of it or your bratty sister will shove jingle bells into the little holes and they’ll get stuck in there.
I know that Wilson bought a bunch of Nexa XiP Pro machines it…is that it? Is this the big-time equivalent of MCB kids trying to pay off their Bambu with crappy Phantom parts? It really feels like that. I feels like a guy spend so much money on his Cybertruck that he has to Uber people around to pay it off.

I’m aware that sporting equipment evolves. It usually evolves for reasons though, in sporting series like the NBA a lot of people who are involved with the NBA on many levels have input on that evolution.Originally posted by martix_agent View Post

Is it pointless to try to make a better basketball, absolutely.
But, many good things have come from inspiration from other pointless inventions.
It's also a capitalist society, and if its not harming anyone, then just let them do their thing, and you can choose to not buy one.Comment

I suspect this is just a marketing campaign and these balls won't actually be used in any sort of competition in the near future. 3-D printing is pretty interesting though. If they can get a printed ball to act exactly like an air filled leather ball, what else is possible? And I think that's the point of this.Comment

It's an RnD piece, designed to prove a few concepts. The fact you can match the size, weight and bounce characteristics of a regular basketball by 3D printing one without air is an impressive tech achievement. And that's all it needs to be, because this will inspire future more important innovations.
And yeah, sure, they probably think they can sell some on the side. Why not.Comment
