    Registering a trailer in Maine

Any of you heathens ever register a trailer in Maine from another state? My state's DMV is giving me the run around and I'm just riding dirty now after a small scene at the DMV. Anyways, I've heard about registering up there for years, and ive found a few websites, but it seems you have to give power of attorney to a company up there and they can register it on your behalf. It seems sketchy on the surface, but there are endless threads on the internet of people using these types of services.

I'm just wondering, has anyone here done it first hand?

I’m in Maine and I’ve registered several trailers. I just go to my town office and do it there. Never heard of doing it though a third party.

I imagine the third party is because I am out of state and it would be using the third party agencies business address. The one I have found most mentioned was www.mainetrailerregistrations.com, which seems incredibly sketchy, but the internet has spoken. Thing is, I don't trust random forums on the internet... except some of this one. ;p

      This is unbelievable.

He's interested for the same reason all the other freight companies reg their trailers in maine. Dirt cheap, No inspections and they often don't look at the original paperwork too hard.

You'll have to power of attorney the trailer to an LLC at least. it is sketchy. People have had their trailers sold out from under them if their aren't careful about the POA but it isn't that common.

What monstrosity on wheels are you trying to get plated that CT wont do it? Home made?

A like new 2022 Scamp 16. I bought it out of state, so it required a VIN verification. So, I went on the DMV website, saw I could use a local PD to get it verified and had an officer fill it out. Waited another two weeks to go to my appointment, waited another two hours from my appointment time, just for the guy to say, “No no, this doesn’t work. You need the emission test site computer one.”
I told him it was the DMV that gave me this info and their website where I printed off the form. He didn’t care. Told me I could go to a spot, to which I told him that we were done here and fuck them.

Honestly, it’s cheaper to just get a ticket for no reg anyways.

but someone mentioned the Maine thing… so, to your first point, I wasn’t trying to duck anything, CT just didn’t want my money.. apparently.

Thats really strange. in NH Vin Verification is a half sheet that any sworn PD can fill out. and why the hell does a tow behind scamp need a emissions related verification?

I see your reasoning. Also: Congrats dude, you have been talking about getting a scamp for a minute now!

I have used them for one of my trailers. Emailed documentation to them, paid the fee, had a tag in 3 days. Be sure to check your state laws regarding trailers registered out of state. My state requires at least 50% of the trailers I own be registered in state. Massachusetts is one state that requires you to register in state. I am fairly certain you do not live there.

I had a small utility trailer my employer sold to me, they bought it from a previous company, was registered in NH under 3k no title. MD wanted a title or the original registration document from NH. It sat for several years without the tags being renewed, companies had changed hands, paperwork nowhere to be found. The Maine registration option let me put a tag on the trailer and if I want to register it in MD now I have the original registration document. My tag is good for 5 years and I am not sure the trailer will last that long.

Flounder - Now I'm left to determine if mine is considered a "camper" or a "trailer." The title says, "Trl," but at the rate this is going... Ya kno. probably worth figuring out what they consider each. Lol

It is my understanding South Dakota will register most stuff through the mail. Apparently a lot of USA expats living in Mexico keep their sleds legal in the lower 48 through that route.

Mind you, I saw this in a YouTube video. Legitimatcy may be questionable.

Ive actually been down this road before trying to register a side by side. SD DMV was not helpful and quite rude, honestly. Felt like home. Ha
