That was the wildest thing I have seen in F1. Cars don't do that anymore. Amazing Grojean is more-or-less alright.

Did his car go under the guard rail? That would have killed him, if the HALO didn't exist. It's incredible that he was able to get of of that wreck on his own, and only has minor burns and maybe a broken bone.

Yeah the nose separated the rails of the armco barrier and the monocoque penetrated through the gap and got stuck, which wrenched the back half of the car off. It looks like Grojean actually went out the side opening rather than the top because one of the guardrails was blocking it. HALO protected his head and kept enough of a gap that he could get out.

halo came right in time. 2 years ago, he would have been headless. reminds me i need to practice my escape on my car. lots of steps to do while you are on fire.

End of the day glad Grojean is going to be ok.

If I were to be critical (and I always am) I wish the support crew with those extinguishers were more aggressive in fighting that flame in the cockpit. I hate to think what could have been if Grojean has been knocked unconscious.

That may be being too critical, I only ever worked wildland fires.

There were some really good comments about the firefighting on reddit (yeah, actual good information and insight on reddit. Happens once in a blue moon.) The gist was that the guy coming from the back couldn't get too close bc it was too hot, and he didn't have a face covering. The one who crossed the track actually did a pretty good job - it takes a few seconds to get the extinguisher going, and then the guy from the medical car directed him and it was pretty effective as Grojean was jumping out. There's one angle where you can see Gro try to get out the front then go the other way bc it was blocked, there's just flames all over, but it's been pushed back a bit by the time he goes over the rail, because of the guy who crossed the track.

Talked to my bro who used to help with emergency services at COTA's F1 events...

And speaking just for COTA, those folks in the blue track suits are mostly volunteers and the suits themselves are only 2 ply. That gives them good range of motion, but not much in the way of firefighting protection.

Looking at it again on a computer and not my phone those guys with the extinguishers were definitely doing the best they could with what they had.

One thing COTA does is ensure the driver of the medical car is a firefighter which may have been helpful here. Who knows. I'm sure F1 will learn some lessons.

Sucks we (Indycar) don’t go to COTA anymore.

We burn e85r which is likely much more safe than the custom fuel the F1 teams come up with.
