    License plate theft

I'm living in Minneapolis currently. Today I found out that some jack ass stole my license plates. The funny thing was I found them around the corner on a similar (shit box version) of my car. So I quickly stole them back. I have no idea who owns the vehicle. They are obviously unstable. I'm hoping they wont try to take them again, but to be proactive I'm looking for tamper proof solutions for license plate mounting. My only idea is security bit screws. A torx type bit with a post in the middle. I'm hoping I can find one with the right threads. But I'm looking for other ideas.

Good chance the other car is stolen. They swap the plates with another car in hopes you dont report them and if the cops run it it will just come back registered to a similar enough car instead of the stolen car...... happens all the time

The other vehicle isn't stolen. I've seen it around since I've been living here for the past few months. Which is why I made a point to look at the plates on it. I assumed they steal my wheels. Never thought about plate theft.

Thats really odd then. Either his plates were stolen and he figured he would pass on the joy or his registration is so far gone he wanted a new identity..... People are strange

Where I live, the plates are stolen, put on another vehicle that is also stolen, driven to a location where someone gets shot/murdered, driven to another location and then set on fire.

The Car-B-Q is a popular end to stolen cars where i am at as well. In the winter all the commuters leave their cars running in the driveway to warm up and the tweakers jump in, drive them to the desert and lite em up..... its the in thing to do

From a Cop friend: License plates are usually stolen for 1 of 3 reasons:
                  1) To attach to a car to be used in a crime.
                  2) To attach to an unregistered/uninsured car.
                  3) As a prank.

So, totally unrelated, but this made me laugh hard cuz years ago I had a liscense plate corrode off and was gone one day. I was convinced some kids stole it at the time.

When my replacements came I found the remnence of the old plate still under the bolts and I realized it just fell off.

im from MN too so your story only made me laugh more.

If you have a plastic plate holder epoxy is the answer.

A number of years ago someone stole just the front plate off my car and my wife's. The police found them later that day attached to the same car dumped off somewhere.
