3 on a tree. Standard is my preferred way of driving.

Axel clicks the link, and reviews the image of an ancient shifter paired with a condescending challenge directed at young people, who have no earthly reason to ever drive stick again. "What is it," he mused, "with old people constantly clinging to their obsolete inferior technology?" Unable to think of a good answer, he moves on to the next thread on mcarterbrown.com.

Ok so funny story to these. My son is 17 and his car is a 73 Nova with the shifter on the steering column (automatic) Its what he learned to drive in. Well after he had been driving a bit he needed to run somewhere and i told him to take a 90's civic we had. He came back in after about 10 minutes and said the car wont move and the windsheild wipers wont turn off. Yea he tried to put it in gear by yanking on the wiper controls until he broke it off inside the steering column...... guess that one was my bad for not teaching him any other way. Just kinda figured he had ridden in all the other cars and must have noticed how they worked

I appreciate this post. I enjoy a good standard transmission, but my current car is a cvt and it's great.

CVT is where I draw the line.

Modern autos (specifically performance aimed ones) are pretty nice to drive though.

I thought I would think so as well, until I drove one. The car is a hybrid too, for extra street cred loss.

I drive a Honda with a CVT, and while I've heard a few concerns about durability, mine will have lasted 11 years next month. I think I've gotten my money's worth out of it even if it dies tomorrow

I don't care about street cred, every month I drive without a car payment is another victory

I'm so used to AutoStick now, I kind of lost my interest in driving manual. Really the only thing I miss is the ability to easily hop multiple gears in one shot. Now I gotta count 'click-7 click-6 click-5 click-4' to downshift and pass if I want to keep it in manual mode.

I enjoyed three on the tree. Houston stop-and-go traffic broke me of manual fun. Now my automatic transmission has 10 speeds.

Our cvt subie is neat, but fragile. Takes everyone a while to get used to.
