Well boys. Luck, Karma or God has a real fucked up sense of humor. Yesterday I went overboard for real, and I definitely wasn't quite so lucky this time.

The one thing I had going for me was that we were in the harbor, unloading the boat. The stern of the boat was filled with empty oyster cages, leaving small corridors about a foot wide along the port and starboard sides.I was running the crane and was going to lift a group of cages along the starboard side, I stepped around the gantry, and right onto a fucking tunicate (fuck those shitty slippery sea squirts).

Like a Texan encountering their first black ice, I skated right off the damn boat. As I floundered my way overboard I reached out to grab anything to keep me aboard and managed to snag an empty oyster cage. Apparently I used all my luck up on Monday, because rather than keeping me aboard, the damn thing toppled overboard right behind me and managed to land on my forehead right as I entered the water and looked up.

So there I was $15,000 dollar crane controller strapped to my chest, head ringing, boots filling with water. I managed to get my left hand in cutout we pass the stern tie up lines through to get myself partially out of the water to keep the remote dry but still with my head well below the deck and nothing in reach to pull myself up further. My absolute monster of a boss ( he's 6'6" about 240) rushed down from the bulkhead and literally pulled me on board.

The good news is I don't have a concussion, the crane remote was okay as I managed to get it out of the water when I pulled myself up, and I didn't get knocked out and drown. It's been one hell of a week though. I've worked this job for nearly a decade, and worked in similarly dangerous roles before this but this week it feels like something supernatural has been testing me. I'm sure as hell not going to let it win, and look forward to getting back to my routine this upcoming Monday with a vengeance.
