    Fill nipple cover recommendations

My fill nipple covers always get squishy after a while. Probably reacting to the gun oil. Is there a brand that people like? Something that stays on tight and doesnt react with common lubricants?

I just use common 8mm thread protectors. I do lose them occasionally, but they're so cheap I don't care. I can get them at my local hardware store in their loose parts aisle for, like, 50 cents a pop. I started off buying black to color match, but I've switched to yellow because then I actually have a chance of finding it if I drop it.

I just did a quick google search and found plenty under the name "nipple cover". And they are quite easy to find if you drop them...

old aluminum 32 degrees or maybe was extreme rage brand is what you want. It's not magnetic but a ball bearing collar ring thingy.

I use hydraulic oil. Doesnt affect any of the guns seals. Doesnt affect anything, really. Except these caps...

I just pulled a cap off like that. I think they react with the oil in the paint, as I dont use gun oil. Or maybe they just deteriorate on their own

You shouldn’t be putting any oil near the fill nipple. Isn’t that what causes tanks to blow on filling? I like the cp, ninja magnetic, or hk nipple covers. Paintball DNA makes fun ones too.

Yeah the oil can turn your tank into a diesel engine on the ignition stroke when filling. I kind of assume OP is aware of that but it's still curious that enough oil comes in contact with the cover to degrade it.

Have there been any confirmed cases of this in PB? The theory seems sound-ish, just not sure the math checks out or that it's happened yet at 4.5k PSI HPA at typical fill speeds.

I don’t think there has ever been a confirmed case that I have seen. I have seen a few videos over my lifetime like 2-3 of tanks blowing upon being filled with the presumption being oil in the tank. A couple news articles as well, but nothing concrete or proven. Also read that the pressures the tanks are filling shouldn’t cause that, so who knows. Probably best practice to not put oil at or around the fill nipple.

Vacuum plugs or thread covers if you want to go the cheap/disposable route. I'd probably go with a locking collared version over magnetic personally. There are also black versions of what you have that are far less flexible than what you have (to the point where it's difficult to remove them).

I got tired of having to either be super careful or accidentally yanking the cheap ones off. I now use the Exalt fill nipple covers that have a big band that goes around the reg bonnet. They're $8 each but you aren't going to lose them.

Why are you using any kind of lubricant anywhere near your fill nipple?

I like the cheap ones like you're already using. I do have a spare quick-connect (metal, like what Carp posted) if you want it for the cost of postage.

I got some really cool ones from someone here a number of years ago. They are aluminum tire valve covers that were drilled out slightly so they fit over fill nipples and then a magnet is glued inside. These don't work on every fill nipples as there are non magnetic stainless steel ones out there but they work really well because if they get jostled the magnet pulls them back into position.

Wish I remembered who that was, at some point I'd like to get some more but I suppose I can make them as well

I'm also pretty interested to hear where this oil is coming from. It's strange that nobody else seems to have this issue.

He's using a hydraulic oil in the ASA instead of a typical paintball oil. Guessing it's mineral oil based, which causes many rubbers to degrade like this, e.g. natural, butyl, EPDM, and silicones. Buna and polyurethanes should be fine, but silicone o-rings/gaskets can be compromised. For that reason I wouldn't recommend it for general use.

I use whatever the person ahead of me at the fill station forgot to take with them.
