When did they bring the Prelude back?
Tags: None -
They announced it close to the end of last year, according to reviews and such it's pretty underwhelming for the $43k MSRP. It weighs 3200lbs and makes around 200hp after including the hybrid system, so I don't really see what it's trying to compete with -
Honda / Acura is taking all the fun cars and making them big stupid heavy boring and overpriced.
The 290% mark up on parts this year really grinds my gears. Now you need a vin# to buy “R” parts as well.
I can have billet control arms machined and custom anodized cheeper then I can buy them from Honda.Comment

Indeed. I was talking with the guy at the dealership and was shocked by the lack of performance. A sportier looking Civic with sportier suspension, and a hybrid, he said.Comment

This is because hyburd. Gotta be green. They only brought it back to be a hybrid. They did the same with the CR-Z. The CR-Z should have been a gas only fuel-sipper or an SI trim level with the giddy-up to match the badge. The original Prelude had poor sales as well because of the price. For a fair amount less you could get a Civic SI or Integra GSR that was a lot closer in performance than the price would suggest. The new Prelude will be a bust because it’s trapped in the middle between the Civic SI, Civic Type R, and every other mid range sports coupe from other manufacturers.Comment

Also, there really isn’t a market for a hybrid sports car for the masses. If you want a hybrid you don’t want a sports car. If you want a sports car you don’t want a hybrid. Rich people can buy things like NSX’s and the hybrid hyper cars because they want to show off. If someone needs a middle of the road car, the new Prelude is at the end of the long list.Comment

really lacks all the magic of the old cars.
old FWD cars were fun cause they were cheap, light, and had short wheel bases.
none of these cars have that anymore.
frankly, almost no cars have anything fun to drive about them anymore. a base civic used to be at least a fun to drive car ... now? bleh.Comment

The old Prelude, even the base model. Is 100 times a better, more memorable, more enjoyable, more pretty lookin car, etc, then the new one. And you can get a pristine old one, for less than half the price, as the new one. The new one won't last 10-15 years. The old one is still running strong, over double that time! Buy the old one, and you can sell it for what you bought it for, (maybe more) years later if you took good care of it. That new 2027 model will be in a crusher, scrapped for precious metals. before 2040. I GUARANTEE IT!Comment

Man that's the truth. Decent condition preludes are $$$ my niece races hornets and she was dead set on a prelude because of the silhouette more than anything, thankfully since it isn't a show car we didn't need to find a pristine one (that didn't stop me from looking at them though!) ended up with a very clean 1 owner 4th gen Si, I did shed a tear gutting the interior but I can't even imagine the awful performance of these new ones. Such a departure from what the prelude was... Sad because I think consumers would be swarming over a new prelude had it been brought back with the right intent.

I think it’s a decent looking car. The price is a tough pill to swallow for what you get though.
The price unfortunately seems pretty normal in a world where the asking price on a VW GTI can be $40k+ now.1 PhotoCheck out my YouTube channel for overview videos of the WGP Karnivor and WGP Orracle!

3rd gen Prelude is one of my all-time favorite cars, bummed out I don't really see what I loved about it here. Just give me a brand new 91 SI AWS and I'd be ecstatic.Comment

I think it makes more sense if you think of it as a replacement for the Accord coupe rather than a true successor to the Prelude. Yeah, performance per dollar is low but I'm just thankful there's a mid-sized coupe still around in a world of ugly bubble cars.Comment

The new Prelude does look very sharp.
I would love a 4th gen with AWS and H22. The full width digital dash is awesome but the ATTS of the 5th gen could out-handle the AWS. The 3rd gen mechanical AWS was pretty dang nifty and there’s something oddly satisfying about the reverse opening hoods of the early gens. I do miss the days of seeing Preludes in the Honda dealers for service.
Double arm suspension will always be superior to MacPherson struts. I really miss the old Hondas. The S2000 was one hell of a swan song of Honda performance. The K Civics are fun to drive, quicker, and more powerful but to me, the older suspension cars felt so much more planted and predictable.Comment

The new prelude is a good looking car and probably a fine car to drive. Allot of the hate boils down to 2 things. The 1st is the nostalgia baiting that honda/acura is doing. The integra was one and the prelude is another prime example. The Integra would have been a perfect modern RSX while the prelude with its hybrid system would have been an awesome modern CRZ.
The other issue is the price per performance problem, which is made worse by dealer markups.
The prelude is a weird combo though. "performance" with eCVT? Hybrid with big Brembos from the type R? (those brakes are insanely expensive and hybrids with re-gen take care of most of the stopping).
The TLX has a nice turbo K20C6 but weighs over 4,000lbs. It should of had the type-r or ITS engine (K20C1) to carry the weight. This would leave the accord 2.0t with the K20C6 instead of the C4 And using an engine derived from the Fit for the turbo civic si was not a great choice. Head gasket issues galore. They could have saved the C6 for the Si.
This would have shifted the performance of each vehicle to where it should have been while retaining different levels to distinguish each step up. It would also retain the same (current) engine lineup.
As a used car, the prelude will probably be awesome.Comment
