As much as I was annoyed by Ayn Rand, she had some good insights on the "progression" of design.
Form follows function and methods. An F1 car looks fast because it is; the design is all about controlling it. A Prius in all its formlessness is efficient but uncontrolled, as a crosswind will show.
I want Arts and Crafts architecture back. That was peak American woodworking.Feedback

I feel like this can apply to paintball too, maybe it's just the natural evolution of marker design but it feels like all of the new guns from every mainstream manufacturer are just kinda boring. Like I don't look at any CS3 and think "damn I'd sell my left nut for that," but something like an old ego or something like that? I feel that they just objectively look cooler while also having more customizability than current markers👍 3Comment

Its kind of hard to make a single tube spoolie pop.
I have a few inception bodies on emeks and ethas.
Those I like.
My favorite is actually the fighter body.
Just feels right, and they're super efficient, shoot great.
Not a cocker though.
Which is it's own special thing.
Nothing else shoots like that.
Now, a good game with an eclipse spoolie... thats a good game. You could focus on moves. And the marker will likely run flawlessly.
Do that with a cocker, you and your sewing machine are one. Stitching flags on opposition dead boxes.
I feel that way about old mags too.
The older stuff is so cool!
Luckily, it's paintball so everyone can do what they like.👍 2 -
a key reason why i started the old school guns tour was to remember and document all the non standard, non boring solutions to the paintball gun problems. because we have concentrated around the ideal in paintball, and that means, its boring.👍 2

That's ok, you're allowed to be wrong sometimes
I don't think anyone will ever convince me that maximalism is better than minimalism. Not for me, at least. Everyone can have their preferences, as long as they are willing to pay for it.👍 4Comment

It's natural evolution, nature wastes nothing. Everything has exactly what it has to fill It's niche. Want to accelerate like hell, you're gonna sacrifice agility. Wanna to corner like a champ, durability goes down. MMA has gone the same way, almost no one excels in just one discipline, they train in UFC style because that's what's they fight in, or hope to, so why master one thing when you need to be proficient in them all? Compromise is always the name of the game. Especially if things want to survive or a company wants to turn a profit.👍 2Comment

An interesting observation for paintball. I've run a bunch of tables at the local gun shows. Selling a little bit of everything, from old military surplus to mall ninja swords and the like. Always leave a little space for some extra paintball gear. Not a lot of sales of it (so I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking to squeeze top dollar out of some extra gear, online is still best for that), but it's mostly a conversation starter. Everyone likes to talk about their hobbies. So I got to pick the brains of some people with little or no prior experience with our game. And after showing them an assortment of paintball guns from my collection I'd ask them which one seemed to be the "correct" design. The one that seems to be laid out the way they'd expect a paintball gun to be. And not counting the literal 1 to 1 milsim jobs, just the paintball gun shaped paintball guns, the ones people gravitated too were the Palmer's Typhoon, and the Nelspot 707. The Nelspot being literal blued steel probably explains that one, anything all aluminum felt too light and cheep they told me. The Typhoon sort of fits that as well being nickel plated brass, but it was also maybe easily understandable. A few tubes soldered together, each with a function of some kind, an stock like tank location, a spot for a hopper that was out of the way, a comfy pistol grip on the bottom, and a plastic but tough looking horizontal foregrip up front. So not minimalist, not maximalist, but instead easily understood utilitarian. Like comparing a 1970's single cab pick up (utilitarian) to a fully decked out King Ranch or a Cybertruck.👍 5Comment

I'll be honest, what a load of bollocks. Bull shit, bought to you by my sponsor, another pile of bollocks.Comment

I think this is what it boils down to. Utilitarian.
Have form follow its intended purpose and requirements.
Maximalism is a wristwatch with rhinestones. Minimalism is a wristwatch with no numbers. Utilitarian design is a wristwatch with numbers and three hands.Feedback

the human component of driving has been removed. minimalism techbros think that the human condition of driving is unimportant. they find driving the car itself to be a drawback, not *the whole fucking point*.
they couldnt be more wrong.Last edited by cockerpunk; 09-18-2026, 10:23 AM.👍 1

That was a good video. Very thought provoking. I am going to be thinking on the concepts and observations he talked about for awhile. As someone who designs things (industrial manufacturing machinery, not nearly as applicable, most are never seen by more than a handful of humans, but still), the concept of how a design makes you feel is really stirring something in me. I believe i do that subconsciously (the gut feeling of "i just don't like this design but can't put my finger on why"), but i am going to try to bring feeling more to the forefront in the process and see how that changes things. It will be a fun experiment.
Bland things stink. Bring back the popularity of individually designed objects. Everything has gotten way to copy and paste. I miss the old housing neighborhoods where every house was different and unique. In the 80's and 90's, we changed so much about our vehicles to make them "ours" it was nuts. But it is cheaper when everything is the same which is likely a major driving force.👍 3Comment

I majored in Industrial design with an emphasis in product design- and throughout my own career as an industrial designer iver always been a 'form follows function' guy, i was (and still am) way into the minimalist idea, to me its optimization- weight- drag- etc etc. I think this is best illustrated with the freeflow pipe vs the freeflow trix- people will have their own opinions on which one they like better and thats totally fair. I do think the guy makes a valid point in his video-that new ferari looks dopey on the whole. I think the utilitarian vs minimalist vs maximalist statement that was made above is bang on. Its also nice to see peoples creativity even if it isnt optimized for one reason or another.👍 1Comment

his point to you, is that you actually didnt get to choose minimalism. it was chosen for you, by powers outside of your control.
and it was.
so you've never actually gotten the chance to design something outside of minimalism. because the product team never gave you space to do anything other than minimalism. like the ferrari, with a 600k dollar price tag, and all options on the table ... why would you ever design for minimalism? you would design the most evocative and emotional and passionate design possible right? thats maximalism.👍 2 -
that makes sense- its a good video with a great take

I'm not rich enough to buy a Honda civic without having a heart attack, let alone a Ferrari.... and i have a good paying job along with my wife!
Why do I care about how they are being designed?👍 2Comment

What’s funny is you can’t go buy a new Ferrari. You have to work your way up and build a “relationship” with the dealer. That involves buying a used Ferrari first, as a test to make sure you aren’t part of “ the poors”. Same with Rolex and Chanel.Comment
