    Extra Shipping Costs?

I recently purchased an item BIN on eBay. It is sold by a Chinese company with a warehouse in the US. I just got a message from the seller that the shipping price I paid (to Canada) was significantly less than it would be, and they offered to split the cost of shipping. Do you find that acceptable? I've never had this issue with buying on eBay before, no matter where it shipped from.

IMO that's not your problem, you paid the price that the listing stated, it's their fault for not calculating shipping correct or having the listing set to not allow international purchases. So they should pay the additional shipping costs not you .

Not your problem. If it's a Chinese company, then there are at least 20 others on eBay selling exact same thing so should be able to find one of them.

FWIW, the company likely doesn't have warehouse in US, they just have an office address so they get listed as a US seller since that's an eBay filter. Once you order, the tracking information just shows that "item is on way to partner". That means that it's coming in from China and will hit a USPS location shortly - then the post office takes over for rest. Kind of scammy IMO, but eBay allows it.

Also, reason that you're likely getting hit with extra charges is that most of the shipping costs from China is heavily subsidized by USPS. So that's why they can airmail so many small packages for so cheap here - it's cheaper to ship from China than domestically. They've been trying to change the subsidy for a while now but nothing has happened. Being in Canada, the shipping from China is subsidized differently so the rates are higher. At the margins they work on, they'd likely take a loss so are trying to get you to pay more.

Thanks for the advice and insight guys.

The advertised shipping charge I paid was for $10 USD, and they messaged me saying it would actually be $42 USD total, and asked if I would split the extra cost (to pay an additional $15 USD), and that it would have a shipping time of 7 business days. The $15 USD could be the actual additional amount, and they could blame the pandemic and/or border for additional shipping times if they are indeed shipping from China. I have had other similar eBay purchases where the item was from a Chinese company with a North American Location, but low and behold I did get a tracking number with a North American place of origin upon purchase, and appropriate shipping times for that.

Anyway, I asked if the additional cost was because of a the use of a courier or a higher tier USPS service (because 7 business days seems quite fast for standard US-Canada USPS service), and if it was, to please only ship with the highest tier USPS service for which I have paid; and if I hadn't paid enough for any shipping, to use the cheapest USPS service available.

If that doesn't work, and they still want additional shipping charges I'll hit them with this:

Lowest usps shipping to Canada start at 12$ in first class and anything usps priority mail can start at 40$ish.

          what did you buy?

An inline desiccant filter for my pump. Looks like they've since upped the price on shipping. The first picture was the same listing prior to me purchasing.

Agreed. Their issue and they need to handle. Maybe an honest mistake but still they should eat it just like any other seller would.

I had a seller cancel an order because they would lose money due to not charging enough for shipping.

I've gotten a few "postage due" packages, where the seller tried to sneak it through as a regular envelope, when it was really a bigger padded envelope, and the Post Office caught it.

I've also gotten a few shipments, where the order is shipped in two different boxes, but the seller makes a copy of the UPS label and puts the copy on the second package (an attempt to save shipping cost), but that eliminates the ability to track one of the packages, as both packages have the same tracking number, and hopefully one package does not get lost.

They ended up canceling the order. I reordered with a different seller at a similar price. Hopefully the same doesn't happen.

I have had this happen as well. I paid the difference and was able to get it back from the seller.
