Gather round with warm drinks and yummy snacks. It’s time to retell the origins* of Walzmas for those that may not be familiar.
Walzmas History:
Walmaz started many, many years ago (well before my time here). Named for the Patron Saint of Brass, Walz and it is in his honour that we give thanks and make offerings to those those that have help us over the past year.
Walz himself is an artist in brass. He makes wonderful and imaginative markers that often become cherished possessions by those fortunate to own one. Beyond his artistry, he has also been extraordinarily generous, having given away some of his markers to deserving people for free.
These acts of generosity are what inspired Walzmas and why this celebration bears his name. It is why fellow members are posting various giveaways in the forum and it is one of the reason why MCB is such a close knit community. People go out of their way to help you here. And not just during Walzmas, but all year round. Walzmas just gives everyone the opportunity thank the community and give back to it.
Walzmas Participation:
Who can participate in Walzmas? Everyone can! Each giveaway has its own set of rules provided by the person who is giving that item away. This may mean you need to be a paying supporter of the forum, commonly referred to as a “greenie”. (It’s only $15 and helps keep this place running and gets you discounts on some sellers items).
If someone says all colours are welcome, the Blues ( no -paying member), greens and even the odd red (Mods) can participate. Best bet is to read the first post in the giveaway and see what the rules are. Still not sure? Just ask or send a PM. No one will be offended.
Do you have to do a giveaway to participate? No! It’s great if you can, but sometime people aren’t able and that’s okay! Again, the person running the giveaway makes the rules. If they only want people who have giveaways to participate then they will state that. Often those with giveaways are given extra entries into draws. People will not consider you a mooch or a free loader. It’s a season of giving, not judging. And maybe it will inspire you to do a giveaway next year!
If you really want to participate but don’t feel you have anything worth giving away you can always give the gift if green! No, not money, but membership! Many people over the years would give memberships as a way to give back and support MCB at the same time.
Giveaways:
These are done voluntarily and usually feature a fun way to choose a winner. Some people put names in a hat, other devise complex method of elimination until a final winner is left standing. These are half the fun of Walzmas giveaways. From being shot by one’s own children, to shooting Lego figure with darts, to shaking balls out of a hopper, the more inventive the better.
Where do people get this stuff? Let’s be real, most of us have hordes of gear kicking around. Many people will collect things throughout the year and set them aside for Walzmas.
Walzmas Etiquette:
There are some unspoken rules about Walzmas that will now be spoken —. er, well written down. Walzmas gifts are not to be sold for profit or flipped. Doing so will invoke the brass curse. Your balls will turn green and swell and this will leak awkwardly. You don’t want it, so just don’t go there. A better (and completely uncursed!) option is to give that item away next Walzmas. There’s a few items that hop around from member to member and have sone great history. Keep that alive.
That about covers Walzmas in a nutshell. If I missed anything, please feel free to chime in below. Not get you butt signed up for some free stuff!!!
Still have questions? Shoot a respectable member a message and ask!
