    Housing code violations/harassment

My wife and I bought our house in 2020, since we got it, we have been inundated with near constant code violations. Some were warranted (weeds being too tall, tree trimmings left out too long). But they are getting more and more ridiculous. And since we’ve been deemed “repeat offenders”, they no longer notify us of citations, we just get court date notices. Since Jan I’ve gotten three 1.) “excessive trash” when there was nothing more than a styrofoam cup and errant grocery bag that blew into our yard 2.) chainlink fence is a safety hazard (when nothing about it has changed in the time we’ve been here) and 3.) not maintaining our alleyway (we have no alleyway)… I’ve decided that I’m going to request judge mediation because I’m sick of this.. I looked up the number of violations attached to our property and there have been HUNDREDS, going back even before we bought the house.

Has anyone dealt with anything like this? And how did you handle it? And was it successful?

to add - nothing about our property’s upkeep is egregiously bad.. while it’s not a shining example of home care, it’s still one of the nicest/most upkept in the neighborhood.

to add pt2 - last year I went a LONG period without going through my mail and found old court summons for previous violations, and both of them had been dismissed without any intervention on my part (leading to my belief that the complaints weren’t valid)

Sounds like some HOA, Karen type BS. Literally someone with nothing better to do than to try to make everyone else miserable. I only evet had 1 complaint, and thats because I had an unregistered truck in my yard. I was fixing it up and when those stimulus checks started coming, thats when I sold it. It was sold 2 days after recieving the violation, so someone probably feels like they "won," even though I was talking to the seller before I even recieved the notice.

This is why I want property with no visible neighbors.

I think if there are really that many violations you may want to get an attorney involved to put an end to it.

Are the violations from the Town/city/county or HOA? Next question is does the HOA have enough funds to fight something like this in a legal setting?

I know that noclue119 had some HOA issues in the past and resolved them.

That then makes me wonder the motivation. Wonder if the inspector's pay is based on the number of violations or something similar.

Start taking pictures to document everything. I would talk to a lawyer and see if you can go after the HOA for excessive violations. Maybe if they know you're not going to take it and might go after them, they might be less likely to keep sending violations. There is someone who has nothing better to do. But if you take pictures and keep them from winning fines, they might move on. If the previous owners didn't fight them, they might think they can keep doing it.

You mentioned there's no HOA? That's pretty insane the amount of code violations you've been getting. Where I live, they'll issue code violations for really long grass, trashy yards, etc. but nothing you have sounds like that. Do you suspect it's some disgruntled neighbor? Someone from the city? Is anyone else around you having a similar issue? That seems wild. Especially since it's not a Karen HOA doing it.

I don’t really talk to my neighbors… I work way too much to maintain any kind of social aspect outside of my family

Still could be a Karen calling you in. I would still take pictures and call the local newspaper or news channel and let them know what's going on. They get bad press over it, the violations might suddenly stop.

Sounds like it's an issue you've inherited from the previous home owner(s) in there are hundreds of tickets going back years. Wonder if it's a case where they may not know (although should) that there is a new owner.

Document all occurrences, documents every change you've made to get to compliance, if possible provide a timeline of when you moved in and the tickets you've received. Physicaly proof is important. Hopefully there are dates of the previous infractions. For the one like not having a back lane, take pictures, Google Maps aerial photos to prove the point and show you appear to be targeted for some unknown reason. Important to show that you've been responsive and correct the issues that have been brought to your attention.

Start going to city council meetings, who’s your Alderman? Who’s your supervisor? Which district are you in? Who is your assemblymen? Who’s your state representative? Nothing says leave me alone like a vote for “assemblyman/ supervisor/ mayor” signs.

I would handle it one of two ways make it my mission to fuck with them. Or completely ignore all of it and go about my business as usual.

Yeah it’s important to keep your cool. You will definitely get a better outcome doing so.

I made videos the day of the notice and uploaded them to youtube as unlisted videos for timestamp. I pulled these up when i was asked to prove myself and it was easy to do. HOA stopped bothering me. I never had an issue with the city.
