You guys will find this funny.

Told check guy to cancel the check (it still hasn't moved) and he replied saying that he was sorry for the delay and he added a tip in to compensate me for the delay.

I replied with, what, you intercepted the check in the USPS system and changed it? He says no, he sent out a new check. But this is basically the first I'm hearing of it

Thanks for looking out for me mcb. Now I'm curious if this fake check will ever show up

For the check though I still don't understand that because the whole point to a certified check is that the bank is backing the money. It shouldn't be possible to put the recipient on the hook since the issuing bank (supposedly) made sure the funds were available and secured them when they made the check. If the check goes bad it's the issuing banks fault for not securing the funds

Basically that means there's no difference between a certified check and a personal check

Certified checks and cashiers checks are not a fool proof as we’d like to believe. And there are federal timelines to deposit them quickly that can be exploited

Exactly. The certified check is a more sophisticated scam than the fake checks — because (potentially) it comes from a stolen / compromised bank account. The end result is the same: you will get a chargeback from the bank.

The whole fake checks/ freight forwarding scheme is one of the most commons frauds. I cant post on OfferUp without getting a bunch of scammers messaging me with this Bs. I have to add a “No freight forwarder” disclaimer on all my listings

The other common scam is the fake payment notification e-mails / texts from banks or payment processing apps. This is one of the dumber ones (no idea who can fall for this. Older folks?)

you should string him along as much as possible and have them send you as many checks as possible. I did this on OfferUp. I act stupid and keep asking for new checks. They usually send them in the Priority flat rate envelopes and their shipping costs starts to add up. I once had a guy ship 4 checks before he figured out I was ******* with him.

if you wanna laugh your ass off, theres a YT channel with a guy that uses voice changers on indian scammers and drives them mad.

                …..

But more thank likely you will get checks in the mail. I don’t see how their scam would work unless they start harassing you to ship first? Which makes this scam extra stoopid.

-There was a photo posted, many years ago, to one of the boards I was on. The guy had a two inch tall stack of fake checks on his desk. He bought and sold collector-car auto parts, as I recall, and would 'act dumb'- "Oh yeah, send the check, I'll mail your part right out!"- and would of course do no such thing.

The funniest part? He had an office off a parts shop- walk in business, probably something like a salvage yard. One day he goes into his office, and notices the stack was gone.

Somebody had stolen his stack of fake checks.

                  Doc.

-This is what's known as the "Spanish Prisoner" scam, and literally dates back to the fourteenth century.

What happens is a well-dressed man rides into town, say somewhere in England or France or Belgium or whatever. He is well-dressed, and asks to speak to the local Lord. (King, Duke, Count, Baron, whatever.) He tells them he is the emissary of Lord So-and-So, the wealthy potentate of some far-off Spanish land- a place they've heard of, but might not be terribly familiar with, and of course it would take months, if not upward of a year, to get a message to, there and back.

The Emissary tells them his Lord has been unjustly imprisoned, by rebels or a disgraced relative or whatever. These people are demanding a ransom for the Lord's release. He himself has the money- and many times more- but being imprisoned, he cannot access it, and neither can his people.

Therefore, he- the emissary- comes begging, hat in proverbial hand. If the King/Duke/whatever would only pay the ransom, his Lord would be so grateful he would reimburse the King ten times over.

Said King, if sufficiently trustful, loads the emissary down with gold or whatever, and he departs.... For the next city where he tries again.

This evolved into the "Nigerian Scam" we're all familiar with- and I know a guy that got an actual physical letter from a "Nigerian Prince"... back in 1992!

The sad fact is that today, you almost have to assume that everyone- everyone- is trying to scam you.

The worse fact is, 90% of the time, you'll be right.

And we are back! After I told him to cancel the first check, he then informed me that the tracking number shows it was delivered.

He sent a second tracking number and sure enough something was delivered

I'm totally going to mess with him at this point.

I told him to send over the name of the shipping company and he refused. Said he would send it over after the check clears

Question, how exactly were you communicating with this guy? Text message right? (guessing from context)

I've done plenty and helped with an order of magnitude more craigslist ads, and scammers will only ever communicate by text message, with the very rare exception being by e-mail.

Also, ever buyer I've ever had flake out on me would only use text messages. So my new rule, call me directly. If you won't talk to me, you don't get to buy my stuff.

Yes, through Google voice. I have a separate phone number that I run for "paintball" and everything Craigslist.

Had a case a long time ago with someone threatening me which started from a CL ad, the guy found an old address of mine from a resume that was online somehow. He got that by doing a Google search for my phone number. So I set up Google voice since it can't be tracked back to me and I can give out that phone number anywhere I want

Smart thinking for a google voice number, its what I'll use for things like this and tbh even stuff like field memberships. Idk if you still keep your resume updated with an address, but I personally wouldn't. I don't even list my cell on there, just my name and city. I get paranoid when a job application ask for an address these days, so many bad actors just trying to farm data from peeps.
