Gun safes?

Hey MCB. Sorry if my frequent posting is bothersome, but this is my only outlet now, so you are stuck with me.


i recently got $1000 from my mom as an early inheritance. She essnentially got money from my grandfather passing, and gave each kid 1k.

I want to buy something frivilous and fun thatll last me forever with it since its a chunk of money attached to my grandpa.

Initially, I was sold on finally finding myself a Taurus Raging Judge 513 or other cool pistol. But with the current gun prices almost doubled from last I looked. I figured now is not the time.

But yesterday it hit me. I should buy myself a gun safe for the few guns I have.

i assume there is a lot of knowledge on the topic in these forums, and I wanted to tap it.

Id like something with a fire rating, and I assume hidden hinges area must? ( a lot of safes with exposed hinges)

from my short bit of research I think I like the Liberty Safe 1776 in a 36 gun cap for the reason of the hidden hinges. I found one at Tractor Supply for $1300.

Im not otherwise picky. I only have about 6 guns now, and I plan on moving eventually so I only want a cabinet I can move eventuaply.a 20-30 ish gun cabinet, with the hinges hidden, and a fire rating seem 8deal for my needs, but Im open to suggestions from people who have expierence on the topic.

i assume you guys have some insights on brands, retailers, leads on scratch and dent units, ect.

Id take a highly recommended safe for $500 over what I believe I need, so please let me know whats worth having.

I've heard very good things about Liberty Safes. After doing a decent bit of research, they're the safe that I'm going with when I eventually buy one. I can't speak very well to other brands but hopefully, that helps inform your buying decision a little bit. Best of luck with the eventual purchase if you decide to go that route

Liberty makes nice safes and that one looks like it'll give you plenty of room to grow into. The price looks good too, think you've picked a winner there. I would definitely look into getting a dehumidifier for it, especially with muggy midwest summers.

Whatever you do, go to a store that actually has floor models you can mess around with.

My wife and I got a Browning safe a couple years ago. I highly recommend it. Smooth lock and tumbler, and as configurable as I need it to be. Buy twice the capacity you think you will need, and remember that you can put other items- documents, coin collection, etc...- inside, as well.

I second this. We put all sorts of other stuff in it as well.

I don't have much experience with different safes, but for what it's worth I like our Liberty.

This is the best advice. I wish I bought a much bigger safe. Whatever the number that they are advertising for capacity is realistically twice what it will hold if you want to be able to easily access everything. If you want to get the full amount of guns in there you will need to be a tetris master.

If you have a Tractor Supply near you look there. They sell gun safes there and have models in the store that you can check out before you buy them.

I personally bought a Winchester safe that has external hinges. My reasoning for it is that the easiest way into a safe is through the side not the door. If a someone who knows what they are doing comes into your house to break into your safe they are going to go through side. Ideally you'll have your safe built into a wall or closet so no one can get to the sides.

There are plenty of other videos showing this as well.

Thanks to that video, I just spent my whole lunch break watching people cut safes up. Lmao.

Point taken on the hinges not being the main access point.

I assume having exposed hinges also gives more storage space for the less cabinet space.


I have much more homework to do regarding these.

You already have a price range so I'd think about what size you want and also the length of the fire rating.
