    Giving blood today

    I typically give 3x per year and donate power red (double portion) through the apheresis machine.

    According to the Red Cross, I save up to 3 lives each time I donate so I get that warm fuzzy feeling in my soul. Plus they have juice and cookies, so it’s totally worth it.

    Anyone else donate?

      Sure, a couple times a year. I used to do it very regularly, but now I do it when the school holds a blood drive near me. Usually Spring and Fall. I am a universal donor, so I am quite confident that my blood gets used.

          I used to donate religiously,. Memorial blood centers ruined it for me. They had me on a call list, and would literally call me days after donating as soon as I was eligible to donate again. I worked field service so I had to take time off of work to donate if I was even in town. I got increasingly sick of the calls. They harassed me for more blood to the point I've since completely stopped donating. Take me off of the list!

          Im also a universal donor so its sad that I feel this way, but it is what it is.

              Bummer they harassed you so much. I’ve donated through the American Red Cross for the last 6 years and have been happy with the experience. They do send out extra reminders to show up once an appointment has been made but otherwise stick to emails. Their staff and volunteers have always been friendly and professional.

              I wasn’t allowed to donate for years due to the work I do in Kenya, but supposedly the rules have changed so I may be eligible again.

                  I always wondered why the questionnaire asked "Have you ever had sex in exchange for money or drugs in Africa since 1997?"

                                Speaking as someone who has received a transfusion , thank you to all of you who have donated.

                                I'm alive today because a transfusion kept me from bleeding out on an operating table in 1985.
