    5k training

So, decided to run a 5k. Mostly to get myself in some kind of shape that isn't round. I've been training for a little over a month now and while the runs are still difficult this is the first one that I really am proud of. The average heart rate is way down from when I started training and the average pace includes 2 min of walking at the front and back of this run so the running portion I'm averaging a little under 12 min miles. Now granted, I can't do that for the full 5k yet but it's just cool to see some progress

Keep at it. The current results are irrelevant. All that matters is consistentcy. If you keep doing runs, and get a handle on caloric intake, you will get in better shape. Don't think of it as training for an event. Think of it as a foundation that you will make and maintain. Everything else can be done because of it. Keep up the good work!

Nice! I lost a good amount of weight by eating well (drinking water, cutting out bread, and added sugars) and exercise. I was prob around 12 min miles and now do 8 min; pb at 6:30. About to hit 5 years running almost everyday. Aim for 30 min of cardio a day walking jogging or running. You got this 5 k dude! Keep it up.

I used the Nike Run Club app. It’s free and worked great for me. It’s just the coach (prerecorded, though I fell in love with him) telling you to slow down.

It really got me prepared for my first 5k, and seemingly it isn’t something I’ve lost, as I ran another one this year without running for six months and set a new PR.

I want to use it for the 10k training, but I’ve been struggling with time management lately.

My point is, it’s a great app if you’re looking for a little direction. Otherwise, the trick seems to be go slower than you think is appropriate to get the distance and the speed / cardio will come with time.

Don't ask me why but doing this as training for an event is really helpful to me. I think it's that I have that deadline that is the event. Otherwise when stuff gets stressful or my hip hurts skipping that one run turns into 2 or 3 and each one makes it easier to skip the next. Having a deadline that is an event is inflexible so skipping runs means I'm risking not reaching my goal.

My goal for this one is just to run the whole 5k. I'm not aiming for a specific time. At once point I ran a 31 min 5k but I know I'm nowhere close to that right now

My wife and I both have garmin watches and have really enjoyed them. They have been doing the running watches longer than anyone else at this point, they basically invented them. Garmin has all kinds of training programs and what not through their connect app. I'm currently doing one of their 5k plans.

            I agree with @Calvin.

Think of crash dieting = Losing weight for a specific event, like a wedding. Time based. Results oriented.

Eating healthier = Over time(not specified) will loose weight. Lifestyle oriented.

Good job on starting. After results fade, maintaining is where the joy dies and you question if it is still worth it.

            The answer is yes.

So cool. "Just do it" really holds up. For most of us, it's simply the exercise of will power over the protests of our miserable disused body. But as you continue to tell your body what to do, it listens, and your get used to exercising your will despite the protests of other parts of your being.

You're on the path, so good. Keep it up brotherrr
