    Inline Skating

I'm thinking about getting back into skating mainly as a fitness push. I actually grew up on skates and have at one point or another participated/competed in almost every roller sport out there. Whatever I do still probably spend a lot of time outside

Right now my big problem is deciding what style of blades to get, I could look into something like hokey blades which are more agile and will be easier for me to get back into (easier learning curve)

Or, speed blades, I can do 125mm wheels which are much better suited for outdoor than the 80ish mm hockey wheels. They are more suited for distance but are also typically less comfortable and have a steeper learning curve to get used to

Thoughts? Anyone else have skating experience?

I roller bladed when it was peak trending but never got serious.

From what you're saying, regular middle of the road recreational skates seem like the way to get going again. They will be flat like the speed skates. Wheel size will not be as small as like aggressive inline stuff but not as huge as the speed stuff. Theres a reason why what is easiest to find (if any are easy to find anymore) is the kinda classic "roller blade" size. I still have a set of first generation roller blade brand roller blades.

I guess its been long enough that roller skates and inline skates might be ready to come back strong.

I come from the ice skating side and used to rollerblade and played roller hockey from time to time and would rollerblade the local sea walls etc. Haven’t worn my rollerblades for years now, but still have them in the basement. Now you’ve got thinking I should bust them out again.

There are supposed to be a new style of roller blade/inline skate that feels much more like ice skating called Marsblades. Never used them, but seem to be nice.

Also if you’re going all 90s make sure you get a neon green Fanny pack to hold yours keys and wallet while blading!

The more I think about it, the more in leaning towards something like this

The 125 wheels being a big factor and it also means I can do something like a outdoor distance race if I want to

I prefer classic rollers. It's nice that now there is a large selection of models and designs - for every taste. In general, it's cool that sports also have fashion. It seems to me that this is more motivating to study. This spring, I ordered new rollers for myself and for my wife, because ours are already worn out. Found cool models in this article. Already very impatient to try it out!

Did you ever do any "aggressive" skating? I personally feel like aggressive skates offer more ankle support. You could always buy aggressive skates and put big wheel frames on them for cruising

Yes I have and I actually still own my aggressive blades. The frames and boots for aggressive stuff are not compatible with different frames/boots.

That aside, for the aggressive skates the boots are 1/3 of the problem, the frames are 1/3 of the problem and the wheels are 1/3 of the problem

Wheels and frames are pretty obvious but the boots are actually really restrictive and inefficient at transferring energy to the ground

I've tried skating some distance in them, it's horrible, think about trying to run distance in rain boots or swim laps in a tux. You can't get any kind of momentum built up because the wheels just bleed it out (because they are so small) and if you do force it I started building up heat in the wheels/frames to the point that I was feeling it through the boots

That aside, if the short boots becomes a problem there are some "fitness boots" out there I can look into like these

Atom Skates provides industry-leading roller derby and inline speed skating boots, frames, plates, wheels, protective gear and complete skate packages.

But, I basically grew up on speed skates, took a break and came back to it in highschool. When I came back I was rusty but it came back in a month or so. So I don't really want to get a high ankle boot from the start if I'm going to be past it in a month once I get some ankle strength back

Also, as I learned today, a lot of the hockey stuff and speed stuff is compatible so if I want to I can put hockey frames on a speed boot

I talked with a pro shop today of a local rink and I'm probably going to go through them rather than buy online, they can measure me up and I can have someone to go back to if I have any problems

Anyway, thanks to everyone who has chipped in on this thread, I know I have basically already had my mind made up but it's made me think about a few things I wouldn't have without it

Yeah it definitely depends on what style of skating you intend to do. I've been into "aggressive inline" the majority of my life. I haven't been as involved lately as I used to be, but I'm in a local facebook group that started off as an aggressive group. It has since grown to include all styles of rollerblading. I have noticed that most of the aggressive skaters now own a pair of "big wheel" blades that they use to cruise.

If your aggressive skates are UFS frame compatible, there are a few options as far as "big wheel" goes.

Mine are definitely not compatible, the frames are molded into the lower boot which is rivetted to the upper boot

Out of curiosity, what does that group consider "big wheels"?

Nice that you have a local shop. We had a shop at the height of the trend. "Inline retro fit" it was really cool.

My neighbor is sponsored by Rollerblade and Insta360. If you're interested in any of of the Rollerblade products, let me know and I can ask for a discount code (I think it's 30-50% off).

I found out the other day that there's a big speed scene here in New Zealand, complete with Peter Michael who managed a run of back to back world championships. Like many, he tried to switch to ice speed, but switchover skaters never really seem to reach the same level. The muscles and form seem different enough to make it almost a liability.

Totally forgot to update this, ordered some blades through the local rink and they came in. I have yet to really put some time into them buti have them now. Still need to mold the boots to my feet
