The Brothers Karamazov, by Fyodor Dostoyevski. A classic that should be easy reading for the average 16 year old.

Well, this comment was way funnier before a member here erased his post where he complained about The Brothers Karamazov being way to hard to read...

So if your son leans toward Fantasy then a really fun series is Thieves' World edited by Robert Asprin. This is an anthology written by many great authors where the "world" is centered around "thieves" in the city of Sanctuary. The only limit in Robert Asprin placed on the others is they can write about anything just can not kill off other authors characters. Lots of fun stories in the series and some good entry level writing for a new reader without being made for teens.

The Talisman, and Eyes of the Dragon - both by Stephen King (and Peter Straub for the former) are both really good fantasy books as well.

"Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield. Historical-fiction about Sparta and the battle of Thermopylae. Required reading for young men in my opinion.
