Maybe a little bit too young for these, but I really loved John Bellairs as a kid. I recently reread "The House with a Clock in its Walls", and it holds up. I also recall "The Mummy, the Will, and the Crypt" being a really good mystery. These are a bit on the gothic/horror side, but I really loved both his major series.

Some great suggestions already in this thread. For something a little on the goofier side, at around age 8 my son really liked the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and ended up reading all the books (12 total I believe) over the span of a couple years.

also recommend 'Swallows and Amazons' Terry Pratchett's books. Harry Potter as mentioned. The Hatchet. Astrix, Tintin were favoritesComment

Earthsea is 10000/10 excellent rank but can be boring for kid that age.
My favorite kid thing is "13 story tree house" and all sequels.
My 5 year old loves Dog Man but I am not a huge fan. Now that he mostly can read for himself its harder for me to edit out the mean words and stuff. Also its really violent but that is what makes it enticing to kids.
It's really hard to find stuff for kids that isn't violent.
Actually best recommendation I can come up with is the "magic tree house" series which are all really good kid books.
I have a few others I will bring up when I remember them.Comment
