    Man Eaters of Kumaon

Jim Corbett, a famous naturalist and hunter, tells the stories of some of the many man eaters he hunted in India and Nepal.

You've all heard of The Ghost and the Darkness - the Tsavo lions that terrorized Nigerian railroad workers, well the highest estimates of their combined prowess fall incredibly short of many of the solo man eaters hunted by Corbett. For instance the Champawat Man-Eater, a tiger, had over 400 kills.

Corbett would go off alone, or with his Jack Russel Terrier, or work with locals to beat the brush. He writes in a sparse and comparatively terse fashion when compared to modern day floral writing. But life was simple then.

Corbett spent his youth in Naini Tal (India) and would set off to his Grandmother through the jungle, but stay in the jungle and have a contracted visit with his grandmother, while his parents remained unaware.

Famously Corbett stayed in the Tree Tops Hotel in Kenya (pictured below) the night King George VI died. The hotel had two rooms, and two guests. The other guest was Princess Elisabeth. Corbett wrote in the hotel guestbook: Last night a little girl climbed into a tree a princess, and today came down a queen. The hotel exists today in a new format having been torched during a civil war.

I've read Patterson's book about how he dealt with the Tsavo lions - now I need to source and read this one. Put it on the shelf next to my Capstick books

The New York public library has it on Libby. You need to be a NY resident to get a card though. Or if you know someone in NY ask them to get a card for you.
