    Travel reward cards

Someone willing to help me select a travel reward card? I’ve been somewhat convinced to get one to aid in family travels. Looking for something with decent reward returns, point rollover (if that’s a concern), low or no annual fees. Never done the CC thing before but looking at plane tickets for a family of 5, I’d like the ability to get some extra benefits from routine spending lol.

I have been using the Capital One VentureOne card for years with no complaints. Meets all your requirements (which were mine as well) though it used to have better returns. For $0 fee, it is only 1.25x points per dollar. I believe there is an additional point multiplier for travel redemption if booked through them though. Can't remember for sure. I mainly use it to reimburse travel expenses like hotels and rental cars using points. For a $95 per year fee, you can get 2x points per dollar.

They have a travel portal via there website that assigns discounts to airfare, rentals, and hotels booked through them. I dont remember a restriction as there were many different airlines listed. Sounds like Nate below has much more experience regarding them.

USAA has a interesting Rewards type Credit Card, but damn that interest rate. Wells Fargo also, one without an annual fee - *Autograph Card. Anyway, Capitol One is prob. best way to go if the APR is right for you

        Ive gotta few.

Delta gold sky miles card. I live near MSP, so delta makes total sense. And I use that one for work trips and or actual flying trips. I just racked up 800 dollars on it for a work trip, and instantly paid it back off once my expense report was done. Its got 15% off flights booked through the app, $200 delta credit on every 10k spent, 2x miles at all resturants, supermarkets, and delta purchases, 1 mille per dollar on all other purchases, first free checked bag ( 45 dollar value every flight), $100 a year in delta stay credits, and up to 80k miles if you spend 2k a year.

I use an American express blue cash back card for all of our bills. $95 a year in fees, 6% cash back at super markets, 3% on transit charges, 3$ on fuel, 1% on everything else. We basically pay our bills, gas and groceries with that and it adds up fast.

Then we just got the Costco credit card. 5% on gas at Costco, 4% on other eligible gas and ev charging, 3% onbresturants, 2% on all other costco purpurchases, and 1% and everything.
Then my wife basically pays all credit cards on every monday.

We pretty much make money on the latter two. And the gold card if my business travel card.

My company told me no on using a personal card for work travel. Oh well, yeah I’ll stick to one for now but the cash back cards are probably better return overall.

My employer puts airfare on the corporate card. But the rest is on mine. And we have the nice advantage of getting per diem for food. So I dont even have to save my meal receipts. Its a fixed amount a day depending on what gsa.gov says for the area. Its real advantageous for building credit man.

I'm in a slightly different boat where I'm willing to eat fees if I see the ROI. I've tried all the levels of Capital One cards. I did Southwest for a bit and they were good too, but a long time ago.

The Venture One is ok. No fee, but low rewards.
Venture is probably best - if you do groceries or similar, the extra $10/ month in rewards points pays for itself pretty well. Venture X has a monster signup bonus and monster fees - good for one year but pretty ridiculous without that bonus to eclipse the annual fee.

I'm not a huge fan of the "Capital one travel" portal. It effectively keeps you from using or earning perks from hotel loyalty, etc. because it's a third party, so it's only really good for flights and travel to destinations you don't have ties to. I get a lot of major hotel chain points through work (but have to pay on the company card) and frankly, I want the chance to use them and earn more of them because the rewards stack well at the higher levels. Capital One Travel isn't bad for flights, though... especially now that most airline miles barely get you anywhere.

The points, once you have them, are useful. You can just reimburse yourself for a statement credit after a purchase, so it's basically cash. Higher redemption values through their travel portal or certain partners, but it's still $0.01/point or better as the floor value. Way better than having to use it towards a magazine subscription or something.

We get several hundred dollars net value out of it each year by being careful to not accrue any interest, and using every single perk we can. Apart from the signup bonus, though, it would take probably $100k in annual spending to truly break even on the Venture X, so that one is gonna get canceled as soon as we finish our big trip this summer. The standard Venture is a good "sweetspot" level for us, and they'll let you downgrade to Venture One if you want to not pay the annual later on. Overall pretty decent.

Im an AmEx guy. I use it for all my purchases I would cash and pay it off when I get home. But the points are some of the most valuable and you can transfer to airline miles or hotel points - which creates huge value. Other perks are great, like their reimbursements for certain restaurants or purchases. I get WalMart+ for free with it.

Also, if you fly for work, get the card for the airline that hubs out of your airport. Then push your amex into it and you can multiply into free trips for the fam

Kinda scary how easy and quick it was to apply and get approved for a card. 5 minutes and a card will be on its way.

Good reason to freeze the credit report accounts when you're not actively looking for a card.
