    Rockabilly & Psychobilly

    Lots of metal fans around here- anyone into Rockabilly, Psychobilly, and/or the myriad of related variations? Stripped down sound and band, upright double bass, and loads of chaos, especially in live shows. I'm more familiar with the newer bands on the psychobilly side of things, but bands like: The Legendary Shack Shakers, Reverend Horton Heat, Necromantix, The Cramps, Demented Are Go, Los Straightjackets, Hillbilly Moon Explosion, and so on.

    The Shack Shakers are one of my favorite live bands (and they are all incredibly nice guys), especially in their heyday. Live shows were chaos- swinging from the rafters, loss of clothing, drinks being thrown, and that was just the singer. They have toned down a bit lately- in JD's words (paraphrased) "We can't get away with that kind of thing when we are the supporting band and outshine the main act." The official video for Ichabod captures it pretty well, but footage from the early 2000's is consistently wild.

    I got through phases where I’ll listen to a lot of it. I like The Horror Pops, Necromantix, Tiger Army, Mad Sin

    The Kings of Nuthin’ are my favorite though. I saw them live a few times. They always put on an amazing show.

      I always forget about The Horror Pops! Never seen them live but I like their stuff. King's of Nuthin' is new to me but they look like a riot live. I'll have to keep an eye out.

        Unfortunately you won’t be able to see them live. The lead singer committed suicide in 2013.

        Oh hell yea now we are talking. Sasquatch and the Sickabillies. Hands down my favorite and Dave is local to me somewhat. Whiskey Kill , The Hangmen are cool and let’s not forget the Misfits.

          Can we lump modern surf into this? Hot rod rock, surf, and psycho/rockabilly are all lovers in the same bed if you ask me.

          If so, check out anything Daikaiju, or Man or Astro Man.

          Also, I'll dig up a vid later, but look up "Hey I Love You So" by Spellbound on YouTube. I love the guitar in that one.

            Yeeees. I'm into a bit of everything, but I'm mostly a punk. Psychobilly is my jam.

            If you like Rockabilly, The Baseballs out of Berlin are great. They started as a pop cover band, but have moved on to recording originals. Their cover of Rihanna's "Umbrella" is one of my all-time favorite songs.

                  I totally agree. I saw Man or Astroman when they got together for their (or their label's?) 25th anniversary. Absolutely fantastic live show!! It had theremins, theremins on fire, and the encore consisted of a homemade tesla coil.

                  I would also toss Igor and The Red Elvises into the mix; the are also super fun live!

                    Social D is quite a bit of cowpunk and psychobilly. I've been listening to Horton Heat on occasion for a couple decades now. Saw them at Riot Fest in 2012 and they were hugely entertaining.

                    Funny that surf rock should be mentioned: I've been getting into that as of late. Starting with The Beach Boys and Dick Dale and seeing where I want to go from there. Lots of my favorite punk bands use elements of surf rock.

                      Dick Dale is amazing! I have a couple of The Ventures' albums that I throw on every so often as well. Good stuff to listen to while cleaning the house.
