It's the "original" band as of 1997, they had a different drummer during their early years and demo recordings before their self titled album. According to Serj's autobiography, the 3 other band members originally wanted to opt to play/make music regardless of band members so if anyone got burnt out or didn't want to tour they'd find a replacement, to which the singer promptly said no and stood his ground stating that the four of them made SOAD, and it wouldn't be SOAD with one of them missing. Apparently when he was burnt out, he told them to move on and replace him to which the band said no that them as a band of 4 was SOAD and they wouldn't be SOAD without 1 of them, they also apparently did test rehearsals with a replacement singer without their Serj's knowledge, and after at an Armenian cultural benefit fest, Serj saw said singer and told his bassist that they should try him out as be his replacement. -
But besides that they're such a tight knit group and although they have different political views, they remain brothers(literally the singer and drummer are brother in laws and prolly have the most massive different views politically), the them not doing stuff together boiled down to their singer wanting their music to be equal contribution from each member so they could divide the profits equally, while their lead guitarist want them to do their old style where he and their singer would write a bulk of the material and have their drummer and bassist give their twist on what the guitarist wanted, so the lead guitarist and singer would have a 75% split while their drummer and bassist would have a 25% split

Seen SOAD prolly around 10 times since spanning from 2006-2024 that 06 era was fun cause the Mezmerize/Hypnotize era was super new and fresh, their 2015-2019 era was cool cause but something seemed a bit off, but they still were great shows. Their current era has possibly been their peak as performers, they sound so tight sonically, the way they interact with one another on stage looks like it comes from a place of peace and brotherhood/friends/family having fun.
Deer Dance, Forest and ATWA off Toxicity are possibly in their discog top 10 if not their top 15 songsLast edited by alpha_q_up; 06-30-2025, 04:02 PM.Comment
