I’ve been playing around somewhat seriously with photography the last year or so. While I’ve been editing I’ve started to notice that some of my best shots could have been just a little bit better if I had paid more attention to composition, or maybe some aspect of my camera settings. When out taking pictures I’ve been trying to pay more attention to those things, and to better review my photos in the moment to see if I can better capture what I’m seeing. For some reason I have some kind of resistance to going back later and trying to recapture those images. Part of me feels like doing so would help me improve the quality of the images I create, but another part wants to, as much as possible, improve my ability to capture candid images in the moment. Many of the most amazing images have been due to intense planning and technical knowledge, but others are the result of an almost miraculous ability some photographers have to capture something in the moment, without much in the way of conscious forethought. Does ability to create the first type of great photo improve the photographer’s ability to capture the second type? Does giving yourself a chance to have a do-over hamper your drive to get it right the first time? Am I just rationalizing my laziness? I was wondering if anyone else has had similar issues, and if so, how they worked through these seemingly irreconcilable points of view.

As an example, this photo from yesterday would have been better if I had took a few steps to the right so that the lines of the roofing were more symmetrical. It would be easy to go back and take a photo from that position, but without the sky how it was in the original picture, it just isn’t the same. I need to be able to see and capture these kind of things in the moment, not after lots of scrutiny. -
best tip is do what i do when going out to shoot softball or any other sports or ren fair or comic cons i mess a little bit in lightroom. or if your around at 6pm east coast time matt granger does live youtube video for contest. you can watch his old one he post to see what people done or did. and see his remarks and group chant or model that joins him. i learn a lot from how to edit and from question people ask. he sometimes does Q&A monday too with steph also. he also doing i live nude video to teach people how to do impled and nude art photography at 12 moon but not safe for work

This is a great example of what I’m talking about. Sometimes you get one quick moment to capture something that isn’t going to give you time to think, plan, or retake. What’s the best way to prepare yourself to be ready to perform in those moments? Study your mistakes so you don’t repeat them? Go back and do things right when you miss the shot? “Punish” yourself for failing in the moment by not going back?Comment
