I’ve been doing more hiking etc in the past few months and have had the opportunity for some great pics that phone cameras just don’t do justice to. My old point and shoot is very much out of date too. So, am looking for any recommendations or experience my fellow MCBers have regarding newer digital camera models. Looking for compact size that would fit in a pack pouch, rather than large dslr models.

i have few question need to be ask need budget and most pock size one do not give what mirrorless or DSLR would give some not cheap. why not look at nikon Z50 with pancake lens. best option but lens is kit one. also give more chance to get other lenses to use when not hiking. i use my one my 2 backpacks or camera bag over my shoulder to bring with me. and i use to used my 70-200mm now 105mm macro or 85mm get used the most. since most my area super humid and dark from wetland of fl

What is your budget. That plays a big factor in what you're looking at. I have had great luck with Canon Powershot point and shoots. They have several models that get down to f1.8 and take really good lowlight shots. Avoid the Elph series as they are crap though. This opinion is coming from someone who has been shooting Nikon dslrs for close to 15 years. If the sky is the limit you can always pick up a Leica

Thanks for the suggestions. Nikon Z50 looks nice, but is a bit more than I want to spend and a tad bulkier than desired.
Desired price would be something in the under $500 range. Leica’s are out, but boy are those nice!
Those Canon powershots seem to fit the bill. Was reading up on different G and SX series models.632

then you have issue. you going to have to get point and shoot camera. so your going to have to get something like this then. they are not great but will get the job done. i would save up then since for what you will really need cost more then $500. i been shoot since December 2016 you find out what i posted and he post will get job done but not as good as Z50 or cheap DSLR camera with lens. you find out you will want more then they give. they are for people who can not handle weight or have cash for better gear. like us paintballer's have done. if you where near me lone you my D7200 with 50mm lens so you can see power of have to change lenses for what shoot needsOriginally posted by LUKE View Post

Are you sure you wouldn't be happier just upgrading your phone? My philosophy over the last couple years has been to eschew point-and shoots entirely in favor of having a really powerful phone with a premium camera. I figure any reduction in capability is made up for the fact that the best camera is always the one you actually have with you. ^ that’s a possibility I hadn’t totally considered. I have an Iphone X, which takes some nice pics when subjects are relatively close, and even in the very close macro range, but I’ve noticed details start falling apart quickly when any zoom is needed. I suppose it’s something with optical zoom vs digital that I’m looking for. While looking around online, I discovered various lens kits are available for phones...seems a little gimmicky, and don’t know anyone who uses one, but maybe I can explore that option too.632

based on what you want is all ,most like point and shoot. to me and rest of photographer will say you want more then point shoot camera since newer point and shoots will lead you to getting something better

I've fiddled a little with the clip-on lenses, and while they do indeed work they're not something I've ever felt compelled to bring with me on a hike, especially when my phone already has 3 lenses.Originally posted by LUKE View PostComment

but those lenses still will not give what true camera can. yes they have improved but camera phone will not give you reach that real camera does. matt granger and northup and jarded polin both said coming up in what they can do. but will not have reach as some best lenses camera has.Originally posted by The Inflicted View Post
