I don’t see my organization updating to 11 anytime soon. We’re still upgrading systems from 7 since many applications only recently became compatible with 10. A lot of apps still rely on IE too, so Edge just isn’t going to cut it.

As for the UI, they really have a habit of copying Apple, don’t they?

I use Pop!_OS and honestly, they're straying more into linux territory than apple these days. Not a bad thing.

Imagine an OS for the software developer, maker and computer science professional who uses their computer as a tool to discover and create. Welcome to Pop!_OS.

+1 for Pop!_OS, though they really need to do a better job of pacing their updates. It cripples my older, infrequently used systems for the first ~10min every time I boot it up.

Pfft. I have issues enough with Windows 8 & 10. No thanks. Windows 7 was the last decent OS from them & I'll run that 'til my lappy dies. Then I'll get a brand new Linux machine.

EDIT: It's funny this comes up now. I just got done re-doing a bunch of updates on my wife's computer 'cuz it was running at a snail's pace. Started suddenly in the last week after a recent update. M$ isn't getting my money if they can't even get their current OS updates right.

It's funny you mention that because two Thursdays ago I booted my comp (windows seven) and Suddenly it's been running like garbage. Programs seem to be "stalling" mid start up for more than 30 seconds at a time and my USB wifi antennae keeps dropping signal. A couple days later I hear about Windows 11... shocking.

Lmao I'm on an OEM $5.00 windows 7 professional Key, upgraded to win10 pro free, now we get win11 free too? What's the catch, I'm still the product aren't I?

I've moved to Linux - and this looks oddly familiar! Even the start menu changes and icon placement and window snapping all look to be inspired by Linux, and maybe a little from MacOS. It looks better than Pop!_OS (which I use) in terms of window snapping.

The main reason I moved to Linux however wasn't the interface, it was the security and privacy offered by open source systems. I don't use any OS that sends usage data back to someone in a closed-source way.

I'm interested to see how much control W11 gives over that sort of thing.

Depending if direct storage is worth it I might throw it on as a dual boot.

I've been running it for the past couple weeks now, surprisingly few issues. I like the direction the UI is going for the most part. Kind of wish they would just go all out and abandon the taskbar, looks a little silly now with all the icons floating in the middle, but a full-width bar so they can put the systray over on the side.

If you liked vertical taskbars though, you are SOL.

Windows lost me a couple years ago when I bought new laptops for a few of my kids.
Specs look good. On arrival, I did the usual routine of deleting the crap they preloaded, and downloading chrome, etc.

Except it blocked you from downloading any other browsers. In fact it blocks all downloads completely. You were only allowed to get apps through the microsoft store, and only the ones it "approved".
So, so shady. I expect nonesense like that from Amazon, with the Kindle, but we still use windows for so much or daily tasks.

Took some work, but I was able to get that fixed. But since then I've only bought Chromebooks. They have there own set of issues, but at least I don't feel like I'm getting scammed

Was that when they were shipping machines with 'Windows S Mode'? That was a terrible idea on their part..

Windows 11 I think will lose a lot of steam if it won't work on anything below intel 8th gen even when clearly stuff well below that meets every requirement, that said I have heard that all it will do is give a warning but still install fine. I'm going to hold off until I get the prompt and then I'll consider upgrading.

                Random left - field comment:

If Valve get SteamOS working as well for gaming as they're promising with the SteamDeck, (which will also support Win11), then suddenly Linux will become a viable primary-pc option for a huge segment of users that before were stuck with Windows.

Will Valve be the catalyst that sends Linux mainstream? Personally I've moved my entire 3D animation/publishing/conceptart/video pipeline over to free software and Linux and it's working out fine. Linux is so close to being awesome...
